Just published today, the Guardian is reporting that v-Fluence, a U.S. company that was secretly profiling hundreds of food and environmental health advocates (RFK, Jr., Michael Pollan, Mark Bittman, Vandana Shiva and many others) in a private web portal, has said it has halted the operations in the face of widespread backlash.
The actions of v-Fluence were first revealed by the Guardian and other reporting partners last September.
Two things of note here:
1) Even though it may be shut down -- and that is a victory unto itself -- there is no way to assess the incalculable level of personal and professional damage that this portal may have caused to food and environmental activists.
2) v-Fluence was funded by U.S. tax dollars via a 3rd party.
As per the Guardian story, public spending records show the US Agency for International Development (USAID) contracted with a separate non-governmental organization that manages a government initiative to promote GMO crops in African and Asian countries. | 1 975 |
