Turkey is one of the six most seismically active regions of the world, the other five being Mexico, Taiwan, California, Japan and Northeast India. In the recent past, on 17th August 1999, a catastrophic earthquake of magnitude 7.6 hit the Kocaeli Province of Turkey, causing massive damage and more than 18,000 deaths. The North and Northeastern region of the Indian subcontinent had also been struck by several devastating earthquakes in the past. Even very recently, the 2016 Manipur earthquake, the 2021 Assam earthquake and the 2020 Mizoram earthquake hit North-east India and caused substantial damage to structures. Earthquakes and their effects on the built environment provide an opportunity for seismologists, and structural and geotechnical engineers to re-examine the seismicity of the areas, identify the vulnerable building typologies, and gaze at the susceptibility of infrastructure and ground failure. The earthquake also reveals the adequacy of prevailing construction practices that may guide to assess the seismic risk of the region and develop a framework for better preparedness for future seismic events. Hence, it is the need of the hour for the entire civil and earthquake engineering professionals of India to re-examine and highlight the strength and weaknesses of the earthquake disaster risk reduction system so that preventing measures can be taken in time to face any such future seismic events (which is unavoidable) with minimal loss.
