Sri Vasudeva Sharan Agarwala and Sri A.S. Altekar: Lodestars of Indian History Research Sri Vasudeva Sharan Agarwala started out as a quasi-historian but finished his mortal journey as a profound spiritualist, almost like a Virakta. Everything he touched, he turned into unalloyed gold. Sri Anant Sadashiv Altekar wrote the first comprehensive history of the Rashtrakutas. He was also the first compiler of the full history of Benares. It was also Altekar who first unearthed the ruins of the ancient Mauryan Empire in Vaishali, Sonepur and other sites of Magadha. All the photos of Mauryan pillars and architecture we see in books and on the Internet are due to this ONE MAN! When a Lake Inscription Opened a Chapter of Vijayanagara History Sri V.S. Sukhtankar travelled from Pune to a remote village in Andhra to decipher just one inscription related to Vijayanagara history. Sukhtankar stayed there for several days and spoke to the locals and gathered every minute detail of the region. If that was not enough, he physically entered the lake, built by Bhaskara Bhavadura, a prince of the Sangama Dynasty – in the 14th century. The result was an extraordinary treatise related to the history of the irrigation system of the Vijayanagara Empire! --- Do read this highly inspirational essay in full! 📑🕉🛕🪔 https://www.dharmadispatch.in/culture/when-a-lake-inscription-opened-a-chapter-of-vijayanagara-history

The Self-Imposed Cultural Commitment of Indian History Stalwarts Did you know that P.V. Kane travelled all the way to Nepal to read just one manuscript? The sort of cultural commitment that the exemplars of Indian history had set for themselves is truly astonishing. This is because they were attuned to the invisible, living connections that history, archeology, numismatics and allied disciplines have with lifeless documents, inscriptions and coins. Unravelling Pakistan - The Jihadi State that Refuses to Learn Pakistan embodies the four stages that unravel in a typical Shakespearean tragedy: how evil first destroys the good and finally consumes itself. This artificial nation is an unlikely creation of a Faustian farce in the person of Jinnah who, like Satan, preferred to be the Sultan of the Nether World than to remain as the second in command to God. By the 1970s, every vestige of art and culture that Pakistan had inherited from undivided India was hurtling towards extinction. The extermination of Hindustani classical music is perhaps the most representative of this wilful embrace of medieval tribalism based on bigotry. The Superhuman Labours of the Pioneers of Indian History V.K. Rajwade issued a public letter in newspapers requesting the people of Maharashtra to send him any old documents, letters, Bakhairs etc., that they had in their possession. If they couldn’t send it, all they had to do was to send him a 15-paisa inland letter card, and he would personally travel to their location. The result of these superhuman labours was the production of his masterly work titled Sources of Maratha History, which runs into twenty-two volumes! The Education of the Exemplars of Indian History The stalwarts of Indian history regarded history as… history. To them, history was the quest for truth; it was not an extension counter of politics or ideology. Almost without exception, these savants of Indian history were deeply rooted in the Sanatana ethos. They had received their primary education pretty much in the traditional manner – first at home, then either in a Gurukula or in the typical village school that had existed in every nook and corner of Bharatavarsha. The annihilation of these village schools after “independence” is at the root of much social disorder and strife that we notice today. This is a truly inspiring essay. The Tapasya of the Tapasvins of Indian History This is the first episode of a series showcasing the Tapasya, the methods and lifestyle of the stalwarts of Indian history. It is easier to gain social media celebrity status by stirring up pride and make people feel good than spending lonely years engaged in honest, thorough and diligent study. Mediocrity is the mother of celebrity while excellence is a jealous mistress. It is this mindless, headlong embrace of mediocrity that must be undone to prevent further damage. The key to this is in understanding and embodying some of the major qualities, attitudes, traits and methods evolved and employed by the true exemplars of Indian history. 📑🕉🙏🛕🪔 https://www.dharmadispatch.in/culture/the-tapasya-of-the-tapasvins-of-indian-history

We need to develop an infinite capacity to stomach unpleasant truths if we are serious about making meaningful and permanent rectifications in history. You cannot cure cancer with a BandAid. Dropping lessons about Muslim rule is an awful idea. 🙏🕉️ 📑🪔 https://www.dharmadispatch.in/commentary/omitting-the-dark-saga-of-muslim-rule-from-ncert-textbooks-is-an-awful-idea-if-true

The Splendid Lineage of Inscription-Writers and Engravers If only we care to look in our backyard, we find such ennobling stories of extraordinarily talented poets and writers and engravers who immortalised our history by literally carving it on stone and copper. In fact, we have generations of such historians who have sadly been forgotten by our own people.
