Students from various NUS halls, residential colleges and houses embarked on inaugural experiential study trips to explore neighbouring Southeast Asian countries from May to July this year, as part of the new Southeast Asia Friendship Initiative (SFI) under the auspices of the Office of the Provost and NUS Global. For 62 university students across Southeast Asia, the summer holidays were well-spent gaining new perspectives on leadership and sustainability through the Temasek Foundation-NUS Leadership Enrichment and Regional Networking (TF-NUS LEaRN) Programme— NUS Global Relations Office’s signature youth leadership programme. Meet Adhvika, a Year 2 student from NUS College of Design and Engineering and Naruekamon, a Year 4 Liberal Arts student from Mahidol University, who were paired as buddies at the recently concluded Temasek Foundation - NUS Leadership Enrichment and Regional Networking (TF - NUS LEaRN) Programme. During the 3-week summer programme, 34 Singaporean students played host to their university peers from across South East Asia as they networked and learnt about each other’s cultures as well as honed their leadership skills. To cap it off, our local students also brought their buddies around Singapore for some mandatory sightseeing and food tours to complete their experience! It's been a jam-packed 18 days for our TF-NUS LEaRN participants in Singapore! They: 🔍 Learnt about Singapore’s history, 🖋️🗒️ Discussed the challenges of being a leader, 💪✨Reflected on untapped talent in the community, 🐛 Explored the different aspects of living sustainably, 🎤Spoke to leaders from various backgrounds and industries about leadership challenges, 🧠 And presented their ideas on overcoming leadership challenges and sustainability issues in ASEAN! We hope all the LEaRN participants had a meaningful and enriching time learning about leadership & sustainability, and more importantly, forging strong bonds with their ASEAN friends throughout the programme!

Deep learning deep in the Malaysian jungle – that’s what 17 Ridge View Residential College (RVRC) students were up to in May, as part of RVN2002 Wild Asia: Conservation Matters course. Developed under the Southeast Asia Friendship Initiative (SFI), participants embarked on a 10-day fieldtrip to Pahang, Malaysia to learn about biodiversity loss, threats to the ecosystem, and conservation efforts within the Southeast Asian region. They trekked through 3 forest trails – the Sungai Yu Ecological Corridor, Taman Negara, and Fraser’s Hill – and went on night drives and night walks to observe and learn about the region’s diverse nocturnal wildlife. The students also conducted patrols with community rangers from the Malaysian Conservation Alliance for Tigers (MYCAT) at the Sungai Yu Ecological Corridor, and explored Taman Negara and Fraser’s Hill with the Ecotourism and Conservation Society Malaysia (ECOMY).🐅🍃 == Keen to be part of the SEA Friendship Initiative? ➡️ Visit bit.ly/nussfi to find out more!

It has been a very busy summer for our #NUS CAPTains, who headed to Laos and Vietnam in May as part of the UTC2420A Sustainability in Southeast Asia: Study Trip to Indochina course. A big HELLO to all our TF-NUS LEaRN participants! 👋We kickstarted the Singapore phase on Tuesday with our LEaRN participants, hailing from 7 different Southeast Asian countries, introducing their cultures to one another. To deepen their knowledge about sustainability and frugal innovation in Southeast Asia, 16 student residents from Pioneer House visited Indonesia as part of SFI2012: Introducing Indonesia, under NUS Global’s SEA Friendship Initiative. We had an engaging time sharing innovative ideas on green technologies and solutions to pave the way for a more sustainable future at Association of Pacific Rim Universities' 27th Annual Presidents’ Meeting, which took place earlier this week in Hong Kong. It was also a good opportunity for us to meet and catch up with partners from universities in the Asia Pacific at the 3-day meeting. Thanks to The University of Hong Kong for being such great hosts too! 😊

🇻🇳 After hearing about Vietnam and the amazing cave formations there, Han Ying Jie and Sun Shuwei decided to join the NUS Geographical Society field trip to explore the country and learn about Vietnamese culture. During their week long trip with 10 other NUS students, they visited the Dark Cave in Phong Nha, made new friends, and volunteered with philanthropic organisation Da Nang Go at a local soup kitchen.
