Ten Hag on Luke Shaw: "I like that he's so honest. After the second game [this season] he didn't play and said 'I fully understand, my performance is not right'."

Ten Hag: "It’s a bonus for us as a club that you bring in young players and they can come not only into the squad but the team and I think that is a part of our project that has to contribute to our success."

Ten Hag: “For him [Garnacho] it’s to keep going in the process. It’s not done. There is a lot to come. There is a lot of room for improvement with him but he can help, he can contribute on the highest level already and I’m really happy."

Ten Hag: "He’s [Garnacho] learnt in the last months about how to play in a team, how to live, how to do the right things in the week, how to have the right attitude in training and you see how he’s acting as a team player & with his individual skills that make the difference."

Ten Hag on how much Alejandro Garnacho has improved: “A lot. He has a skill that I don’t see many players in the Premier League having - he beats players one on one."

Ten Hag: “Bruno [Fernandes] was [an] important factor in that role [against Man City] and he was important to the pressing as well, I think. I didn't know he was [Sky’s] Man of the Match, but he was my Man of the Match, definitely, Bruno Fernandes.”

Ten Hag: “I think he [Bruno] played that role [vs City] really brilliantly on the right and on the left also. I think the rest of the team adapted well to the situation and I think we had really good breaks by finding the free man.”

Ten Hag: “The idea was, with Bruno on the right wing [vs City], especially in defending, but he defended, I think, as usual. But in possession, he had a role to come in between the lines to bring an extra player there, to bring the opponent problems in hesitation and confusion.”

Ten Hag: “Every third day, we have to deliver and the players have to get in the right rhythm from a physical point of view, but also mentally and be ready for the next game and that is against Crystal Palace on Wednesday.”

Ten Hag on whether Wout Weghorst would be in contention to start vs Crystal Palace: "I have to overthink that, so first settle down this game [City] we have to set the right conclusions, then we will make the clear plan."

Ten Hag: "But we saw that he wasn't capable of going 100% and that's what you need. Also, to avoid injury, that's why we took him off. But that also had a negative impact on our game after half-time."

Ten Hag: "He [Martial] begged to start [against Man City] and I knew the start was so important in this game. He's especially really good in pressing, a really big element in our pressing - he did that really well before half-time."

Ten Hag on Anthony Martial: "I hope to avoid him getting injured but he was complaining and that's why he didn't train in the week [before facing Man City], we decided and he decided as well [that he was fit enough to start]."
