Gaza: Israel commits another massacre against civilians trying to access communications and Internet services Palestinian Territory - The Israeli army has committed another horrific massacre against Palestinian civilians in Gaza City who were trying to access communications and Internet services. This adds another crime to the long list of atrocities that Israel’s army has committed against the civilian population in the Gaza Strip since its genocidal war began last October. Israel has committed full-fledged war crimes and crimes against humanity as part of its genocide in the Strip, ongoing for nearly eight consecutive months now. Notably, the Israeli army continues to repeatedly target and kill Palestinian civilians, including journalists, as they attempt to access communications and Internet services to reach their families or employers. Using aerial bombardment, snipers, or drones, Israel directly targets these individuals—who pose no threat or danger to its army—in various areas of the Gaza Strip. Gaza: Israeli army storms UNRWA schools and kills more civilians in Jabalia Palestinian Territory - The Israeli army has stormed UNRWA-run schools sheltering hundreds of displaced families in Jabalia, northern Gaza Strip, killing and arresting dozens of them. Israel has also forced thousands of civilians to evacuate under non-stop air and artillery bombardment. The Euro-Med Monitor field team is monitoring the escalation and acceleration of the Israeli assault on the civilian population in Jabalia and its refugee camp. The assault started on Saturday evening (11 May), just a few hours after the Israeli army issued new evacuation orders against 10s of thousands of people, amid heavy air and artillery strikes. Israeli army carries out random killings, new forced displacement campaign in Gaza City’s Zaytoun neighbourhood Palestinian Territory - As part of its ongoing military operation in Gaza City, the Israeli army carried out a second day of random killings in the city’s southeastern Zaytoun neighbourhood. Israel’s clear aim is to impose a new forced displacement campaign, destroying Gaza City and the Gaza Strip’s northern region, and evacuating its residents. The Israeli army conducted its second military operation in less than three months in the Zaytoun neighbourhood. Amid heavy Israeli air and artillery attacks, a military ground incursion, the forced evacuation of hundreds of families, and the bombing of residential squares, Palestinians in the area are struggling to survive. Netherlands’ crackdown on student protests is part of growing suppression of pro-Palestinian voices in EU Geneva - Peaceful student protests and encampments spreading across Europe urging universities to cut ties with Israel over its genocide in Gaza are being met with alarmingly violent crackdown, clashes, and arrests. This is in breach of European Union citizens’ fundamental rights to freedom of expression, assembly, and association. The student “intifada”—an Arabic word that can refer to both violent and non-violent grassroots uprisings—is growing in multiple EU Member States. From Germany, France, and Denmark to Italy, Austria, Spain, Ireland, and Belgium, pro-Palestinian students have been occupying the halls, courtyards, and facilities of some of the largest and most prestigious universities in Europe, creating “liberated zones” to grab attention and make their demands heard. During its forced evacuation of civilians, Israeli army kills 12 members of same family for no reason Palestinian Territory - Twelve civilians were killed and three others were injured in a direct and deliberate attack by Israel on 4 December 2023, for no reason, a Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor investigation conducted over the past months has revealed. In the first week of December 2023, activists shared a video clip on social media that depicts a group of people—including women and children—lying on the ground by a cart on a Gaza City street. The Euro-Med Monitor team captured the video and visited the targeted site to ascertain its characteristics and attempt to identify the victims, who appeared to be civilians. UK’s ‘Rwanda Plan’ is an affront to human rights Geneva - The United Kingdom government’s insistence on advancing its “Rwanda Plan” for the deportation of asylum seekers is a regressive step that undermines decades of progress in refugee protection. Both the legality and morality of this plan are seriously flawed and represent an assault on the very foundation of international law. Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor urges the UK to uphold its obligations under the 1951 Refugee Convention, respect the inherent dignity and rights of asylum seekers, and refrain from penalizing individuals based on the manner of their entry. The UK government announced a Memorandum of Understanding in April 2022 with the government of Rwanda, titled Migration and Economic Development Partnership. Fortress Europe’s migration pact: A blow to human rights, international protections Geneva - The European Union’s “migration pact” is merely a continuation and escalation of policies emphasising tougher controls and expedited deportations of asylum seekers, and has a dangerous potential to erode fundamental rights and protections. This myopic approach, coupled with the pursuit of containment agreements with third countries, risks not only failing to address the root causes of migration but also exacerbating human suffering and instability. As the EU moves forward with this contentious reform, it must confront the moral imperative of protecting vulnerable populations while ensuring respect for human rights both within its borders and beyond. Gaza: With its potential military operation in Rafah, Israel threatens to execute over 1.2 million Palestinians Palestinian Territory - The Israeli army issued on Monday new evacuation orders against 10s of thousands of displaced Palestinians in Rafah in the far south of the Gaza Strip. These orders are an apparent prelude to the start of its new military operation, which threatens to execute more than 1.2 million people in the city and is an escalation of Israel’s genocide against Palestinians in the Strip, a crime that has been ongoing since 7 October 2023. Through written leaflets, text messages, and recorded phone calls, the Israeli army has ordered Rafah’s civilian population to move out of the city’s eastern neighbourhoods, particularly the area of Al-Shouka as well as Al-Salam, Al-Geneina, and Al-Byouk, toward the area of Al-Mawasi. However, Israel provided no explanation as to how the civilian population would be safely transported to Al-Mawasi, which is west of the nearby city of Khan Yunis, or how they would be organised upon their arrival. Gaza: Israeli army illegally holds Palestinian woman hostage to force her brother into giving himself up Palestinian Territory - The Israeli army detained a Palestinian woman in the Gaza Strip for several hours in order to blackmail her brother into turning himself in. She was later released and separated from her spouse and children, which is another common offense in the ongoing string of Israeli crimes being committed in the Gaza Strip for seven consecutive months. Israeli forces detained Enas Abu Al-Moazza, the wife of a Palestinian journalist, for approximately 12 hours during her recent attempt to escape Gaza City. Abu Al-Moazza and her family were heading towards the south when she was detained at an Israeli military checkpoint set up in the Netzarim area of the central part of the Strip. She was later released and ordered to return to the northern Gaza Strip, after the seizure of all of her belongings. Press release: https://euromedmonitor.org/a/6302
