The colors will end up looking way more wrong than you'd expect on other screens if you don't have a proper color setup on your monitor.
There's a specific color calibrator called the 'NEC SpectraSensor Pro', which is supposed to be only able to work with NEC monitors, which means it resells super cheaply for the degree of functionality. However, if you use the open source display calibration software "DisplayCAL", it just gets picked up as the sensor it's running under the surface, and can be used like any other calibrator.
