Leaders of Japan, Solomon Islands discuss Indo-Pacific issues
Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae and Solomon Islands Prime Minister Matthew Wale have exchanged opinions concerning the situation in the Indo-Pacific region, with reference to moves there by China.
The talks between the leaders took place on Thursday at the Prime Minister's Office in Tokyo.
In her opening remarks, Takaichi said the two countries are friends linked by the Pacific Ocean and share values regarding freedom, democracy, the rule of law and human rights, among others. Takaichi also said she wants to increase cooperation so that both countries become strong and prosperous.
Wale, as chairperson of the Pacific Islands Forum made up of island nations and others in the Pacific Ocean, earlier this month criticized the launch of a missile by a Chinese strategic nuclear-powered submarine on July 6 that landed in international waters in the Pacific. Takaichi and Wale exchanged views regarding the situation in the Indo-Pacific region including China's moves.
Also during their talks, it was announced that the Football Association of Nara Prefecture, where Takaichi is from, would donate 50 soccer balls to the Solomon Islands given the popularity of the sport there. Takaichi handed Wale a ball that she had personally signed.

| 2 | Japan's inflation up 1.6% in June
Japan's inflation for June ticked up 1.6 percent from a year earlier.
The internal affairs ministry says the Consumer Price Index, excluding fresh food, rose from the 1.4 percent increase recorded in May.
The CPI has remained below the Bank of Japan's 2 percent target for five straight months.
The low rate of increase is partly due to a government program to reduce education costs.
A drop in gasoline prices also contributed. The government is keeping the prices down with subsidies amid the situation in the Middle East.
But overall food prices, excluding fresh items, rose 3.1 percent from last year.
Coffee beans jumped 23 percent, boxed lunches increased about 11 percent, and chocolate was up nearly 9 percent.
But rice prices fell for the second straight month, dropping about 9 percent. It was the biggest decline since August 2015.

| 3 | Japan to set up expert panel to discuss future policies on foreign nationals
Japan's government decided on Friday to set up a new panel of experts to examine future approaches to accepting foreign nationals.
The government in January compiled a set of basic ideas on future policies regarding foreign nationals, which include stricter requirements for obtaining Japanese nationality.
Under the coalition agreement, the ruling Liberal Democratic Party and the Japan Innovation Party have stated that they will formulate a "population strategy" by the end of fiscal year 2026 that specifies numerical targets regarding the acceptance of foreign nationals.
Panel members are due to discuss possible impacts on the country's social security system and education. The members also plan to consider how to accept foreigners while taking into consideration future demographic expectations.
The government says it will draw up a set of basic policies by the end of the current fiscal year based on discussions at the panel.
The government also decided to set up another expert panel to create a program for foreigners living in Japan to learn Japanese. Furthermore, the government plans to increase the number of officials at the Immigration Services Agency to strengthen measures against foreigners who are illegally staying in Japan.
Justice Minister Hiraguchi Hiroshi spoke to reporters after the Cabinet meeting. He said the government is aware that more appropriate immigration control is urgently needed in the midst of growing public interest in the rapidly increasing number of foreign residents.
Hiraguchi said his ministry will swiftly conduct the necessary review regarding the urgent establishment of a new structure for the Immigration Services Agency and will proceed with this work as soon as possible.

| 4 | Dodgers visit White House, Trump praises Ohtani and Yamamoto as 'something'
Ohtani Shohei, Yamamoto Yoshinobu and other members of the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team have made a courtesy visit to the White House. US President Donald Trump praised the Japanese players.
The Dodgers won their second consecutive World Series title last year for the first time and their ninth overall. The team's players visited the White House on Thursday and met with Trump.
Ohtani was selected last year as Most Valuable Player for the fourth time overall and the third year in a row in Major League Baseball. Trump said: "No player has ever earned more than one unanimous league MVP, except for an international legend named Shohei Ohtani. That's him. He's amazing. Everybody loves him."
Regarding Yamamoto, a pitcher who won three games in the World Series last year, Trump said, "Pitched an incredible Game 6, sending the Dodgers to an unforgettable Game 7."
After shaking hands with Yamamoto, Trump pointed to Ohtani and said: "You are something. You both something." Both players smiled.
It is customary for teams that win the World Series to visit the White House the following year. The Dodgers have won consecutive titles so have visited two years in a row.

| 5 | Nikkei 225 falls sharply on oil price rise, AI spending worries
The Nikkei 225 stock index fell sharply on Friday, as concerns about higher crude oil prices and heavy spending on AI infrastructure weighed on investor sentiment.
The benchmark fell 2.7 percent to end the day at 64,611. It lost more than 2,200 points at one stage, down more than 3 percent from Thursday's close.
WTI crude oil futures hit 93 dollars a barrel overnight, as the United States and Iran continue to exchange fire.
Concerns resurfaced over whether huge spending on AI infrastructure by the US IT giants is excessive, and investors placed sell orders for shares related to AI in Japan.
As these negative factors accumulated, investor sentiment worsened and the losses increased.
Analysts say investors will closely focus on monetary policy meetings in Japan and the US next week, as well as on the announcement of financial results by semiconductor-related firms. They point out the market may react sharply, depending on the results.

| 6 | Japan trade minister calls additional US tariffs 'regrettable'
Japanese Trade Minister Akazawa Ryosei said the new US tariffs on Japan were "regrettable."
Akazawa spoke to reporters at a news conference on Friday.
He said: "Industrial and trade activities in our country are conducted in accordance with international rules. So, it is regrettable that the US has chosen to impose tariffs by citing the absence of an import ban on products made with forced labor."
Akazawa also said Tokyo had confirmed with Washington that Japan would not face any additional tariffs beyond those agreed upon last year.
He added that the Japanese government will keep in close communication with the US side over this issue.
The Trump administration argues that excessive production by Japan, China and other trade partners is dealing a blow to the US industry. Washington is currently looking into this matter and may raise tariffs further.
Akazawa said he will refrain from making any comments that would prejudge the outcome of the US investigation. But he said he does not anticipate a conclusion that would impose any additional burden on Japan.

| 7 | Children enjoy sprawling sunflower maze in Japan's Nagasaki Pref.
Children in Japan's western prefecture of Nagasaki have explored a giant maze made with about 150,000 sunflowers.
Elementary school students have created a sunflower maze each year in Unzen City since 2023 with the help of local residents.
The children themselves designed the route from the entrance to the exit. They hope the maze will become a new tourist attraction.
Third graders put the finishing touches on this year's creation on Thursday by decorating the entrance with yellow strips of paper. One of them urges visitors to stay positive like the sunflowers.
Students then made their way through the maze in search of the exit. The sunflowers, as tall as the children themselves, fill a 3,300-square-meter field.
Some children described the experience as challenging but fun.
The attraction will remain open to the public through the end of this month.

| 8 | JFA, Japan men's soccer team head coach Moriyasu hold news conference
Japan Football Association President Miyamoto Tsuneyasu says the JFA decided to offer Moriyasu Hajime a short-term contract to continue leading the men's national team as Japan aims for the Asian Cup title.
The JFA decided at a board meeting on Thursday that Moriyasu will stay on as head coach through the Asian Cup, which will be held in Saudi Arabia in January and February.
The association also decided that Oiwa Go, currently head coach of the men's national youth teams preparing for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, will succeed Moriyasu after the tournament. Oiwa is expected to double as head coach of the men's national team.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, Moriyasu said he intends to do his best to produce good results within the given timeframe.
It is rare for the JFA to retain a head coach of the national team for another six months following a World Cup. Oiwa will take over the post in March.
Miyamoto said that Oiwa was picked up as the next head coach as the team needs a fresh atmosphere as it trains for the next World Cup.
The JFA head also said he wants Oiwa to focus on leading the youth team to victory at the upcoming Asian Games.
He said Oiwa will be able to build national teams with and without age limits based on the same concept by concurrently serving as head coach.
He noted that younger players will benefit from a familiar environment when they move up to the national squad.
Miyamoto said the dual role will be tough for Oiwa, but he believes it will help the teams.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has expressed concern about current Japan-China relations and stressed the importance of stronger Japan-US ties to secure deterrence against China.
Rubio gave an exclusive interview to NHK in the Philippines on Thursday. Regarding the relationship between Tokyo and Beijing, he said that "the rhetoric from Beijing is very aggressive and seems to be particularly focused on Japan."
He added, "But by the same token, we think one of the best ways to prevent conflict is deterrence, and the best way to have deterrence is to continue to build out our relationship."
The secretary also said that the threats posed by China extend not just to the military sphere, but also to the economic domain. He said, "China has weaponized access to critical minerals and supply chains, and are using it against Japan, perhaps more than any other country in the world."
Rubio also spoke about Chinese President Xi Jinping's scheduled visit to the US in September. He said, "Any time the leaders of the two most powerful countries and the economies in the world are meeting, that's a relevant meeting, and we want it to be a successful meeting."
The secretary added, "By the same token, you know, we're not going to walk away from our commitments to our partners in the region."
When asked whether the US might approve the sale of weapons to Taiwan, which China opposes, Rubio said that he did not think the arms sales issue and the visit were related. He added that the US policy toward Taiwan remains unchanged.

Leaders of India's youth-led Cockroach Janta Party say the government has asked them to wait until Saturday for a response to their demands. The group has been calling for the resignation of the education minister. This follows violent clashes with security personnel on Monday.
Public anger has been growing since the leak of a national medical exam paper earlier this year. The movement has escalated into the largest pressure campaign against Narendra Modi's administration in recent years.

The protest site in New Delhi has drawn huge crowds. People across India have been using delivery apps to send food, water and other supplies in support of the demonstrators.

Friday marks one year since major cross-border clashes erupted between Thailand and Cambodia. Both countries agreed on a ceasefire in December, but tensions along the boundary persist.
Thailand has continued its construction of fences in the area. The border remains effectively closed.
On the Cambodian side, more than 20,000 people remain displaced, while foreign arrivals to Angkor Wat have fallen by more than 30 percent compared to the same period last year.
The two countries signed a memorandum in 2001 on joint resource development in areas where maritime boundaries had yet to be determined.
However, Thailand decided in May to withdraw from the deal. Cambodia responded by seeking conciliation under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.
Fighting has left around 100 civilians and soldiers dead on both sides.

Torrential rains and flooding have inundated India, Pakistan and Afghanistan, with the death toll exceeding 80.
In India's northeastern state of Assam, floods have caused widespread damage to farmland and infrastructure.
Local media reports say at least 47 people were killed after heavy rains hit the region. An official said another 70 to 80 remained missing on Thursday.
Reuters quoted the state's disaster management authority on Wednesday saying heavy rains had impacted more than 650,000 people across 11 districts.

Operators of Shinkansen bullet trains and expressways have announced their congestion forecasts for the upcoming Bon holidays.
Japan Railway companies said on Friday that congestion on Shinkansen trains outbound from Tokyo will likely peak on August 8, and inbound to the capital on August 16.
They announced the number of bookings on Shinkansen for the Bon holidays from August 7 to 16, saying about 2.99 million seats, or about 37 percent of all seats available for booking, had been reserved as of Thursday.
Expressway operators say traffic jams on outbound lanes are expected to peak on August 8 and August 13, while those on inbound lanes will likely peak on August 14 and 15.

| 14 | US announces new tariffs on 60 trading partners
US President Donald Trump's administration has announced that it will soon impose further tariffs on countries and regions, including Japan, that make up the top 60 US trading partners.
It said that the new tariffs will take effect just after 12 a.m. on Friday, US Eastern Time, which is just after 1 p.m. on Friday in Japan.
It said imports from Japan will be subject to a total tariff of 12.5 percent, including existing levies.
The administration in February imposed tariffs of 10 percent on a broad range of countries and regions, including Japan, based on Section 122 of the Trade Act. But those were for a period of 150 days and are due to expire just after 12 a.m. on Friday, US Eastern Time.
Ahead of the expiration, the Trump administration announced the new tariffs on the top 60 trading partners based on Section 301 of the Trade Act, saying they had not taken sufficient measures against the production of goods made with forced labor.
Under the new tariff, if the current rate on Japanese imports is less than 12.5 percent, it will be raised to that amount. If the existing tariff is 12.5 percent or higher, then the new tariff will not be imposed.
The administration also said that based on Section 301 it is proceeding with investigations into alleged manufacturing overproduction by countries, including Japan and China, and will soon announce the results.
The Japanese and US governments last year agreed that if existing tariffs on Japanese goods were less than 15 percent, they would be raised to that level as an upper limit.

| 15 | Zelenskyy discussed peace talks with US envoys by phone
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says that, during a telephone conversation with US envoys on Wednesday, he was briefed on a couple of ideas regarding peace talks with Russia.
At a news conference on Thursday, Zelenskyy said that he had had a phone call the previous day with US President Donald Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, and son-in-law, Jared Kushner.
Zelenskyy said that he will receive the relevant proposals and discuss them with the Americans as soon as possible. He noted that the Americans will speak with the Russians after that. The president explained that is how the process has worked.
He said if Ukraine understands that there is a real opportunity to seriously discuss the plan, there will likely be a trilateral meeting with the US and Russia. He added that all of this needs to be done before autumn.
Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke to reporters in the Philippines on Thursday.
When asked about the proposals for a peace deal that were reportedly discussed at the US-Russia summit last August, Rubio said, "Those failed."
He added, "You can't have a peace deal unless both sides agree to it." The secretary said, "We'll have to find new suggestions and new ideas." He noted that the proposals were not acceptable to Ukraine.
A Ukrainian media outlet has reported that those proposals involved the division of territories.
The European Union on Thursday announced its latest sanctions package against Russia.
The package includes keeping the oil price cap on Russian seaborne crude exports at 44.10 dollars per barrel until July 2027. This is to prevent Russia from benefiting from rising crude oil prices due to the US-Iran conflict.
The new package also sanctions 41 more vessels in Russia's "shadow fleet," which carries oil and gas to bypass international sanctions.

A government survey has found that the ratio of people in Japan who have used generative AI programs topped 50 percent for the first time.
The internal affairs ministry released this year's white paper on information and communication.
The report says 58.8 percent of people in Japan used generative AI services in fiscal 2025 that ended in March. The figure is more than double that of the previous year.
The figures are higher among younger people -- at nearly 92 percent for those aged from 15 to 19, and around 78 percent among those in their 20s.
But only around 44 percent of people in their 50s and around 34 percent of those in their 60s use the technology.
Japan lags behind other countries. The overall average of generative AI use stands at 93.6 percent for China and 75.6 percent for the United States and Germany.
Among Japanese firms, roughly 69 percent said they actively use the technology, or use it in limited areas.
The figure is up nearly 20 points from the previous fiscal year, but it remains lower than that of China and the US.
The survey says many Japanese firms use the technology for creating minutes of meetings or writing emails. But businesses in the US and elsewhere cite research, product development and marketing as the purposes.
The ministry says progressive business leaders abroad regard AI not just as a tool for efficiency but as a tool for innovations. The ministry expresses hope that top managers of Japanese companies will change their mindset for adopting AI.

| 17 | UN leadership candidates discuss reforms as selection process heats up
The six candidates vying to become the next secretary-general of the United Nations held a debate on Thursday on reforming the world body and other issues.
The candidates include Chile's former President Michelle Bachelet, Ecuador's former Foreign Minister Maria Fernanda Espinosa and International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Grossi.
Also in the running are UN Conference on Trade and Development Secretary-General Rebeca Grynspan, Guyana's Ambassador to the UN Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, and former Senegalese President Macky Sall.
The participants exchanged opinions on the dysfunctional Security Council and UN reforms, which have been facing difficulty due to pressure to cut spending.
Delegates from member states, UN staff and others who heard the debate responded to a survey.
UN sources say nearly 50 percent chose Rodrigues-Birkett as the candidate who was the most convincing.
The Security Council will start closed-door voting from late July to narrow down the list of candidates.
Diplomatic maneuvering is expected to intensify over the successor to outgoing Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who will step down at the end of this year after 10 years in office.

| 18 | Ukraine's political crisis continues over dismissal of defense minister
Former Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov has rejected President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's offers for other posts, saying he will not accept any position other than defense minister. Zelenskyy effectively dismissed Fedorov earlier this month.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Zelenskyy said he offered Fedorov several positions, including deputy prime minister for military innovations.
Fedorov turned down the offer in a statement, saying he will not accept any position other than defense minister. He said only Ukraine's president, defense minister and the commander-in-chief of the armed forces can actually shape the course of the war.
Protests calling for Fedorov's reinstatement are being held daily in the capital Kyiv.
One 32-year-old demonstrator said the positions that Fedorov has been offered are without much leverage. He said he will come and protest until Fedorov returns to his post.
Ukrainian political analyst Volodymyr Fesenko said he believes dismissing Fedorov was a serious political mistake by the president.
He said whether Ukraine achieves domestic political stabilization, or whether the conflict continues, will largely depend on Fedorov's decisions and future actions.

Data shows Japanese women in 2025 had the highest average life expectancy among countries that release such data, topping the list for the 41st straight year.
Japan's health and welfare ministry says the average lifespan for Japanese women was 87.33 years, up by 0.2 years compared to the previous year.
The figure for Japanese men was 81.35 years, up 0.25 years. Japanese men came in seventh place, behind countries such as Sweden, Switzerland and Italy.
Compared to 2024, the percentage of deaths caused by cancer, COVID-19 and heart illnesses decreased, while the proportion of deaths from pneumonia and old age rose.
Average life expectancies tended to become shorter due to the increase of deaths from the coronavirus. But last year, average lifespans for both men and women surpassed those from the previous year for the first time in two years.
The ministry says that, although life expectancy remains below pre-pandemic levels, deaths from COVID-19 declined, and it believes their impact on life expectancy significantly decreased.
The ministry says life expectancy for both men and women is among the highest in the world, reflecting the high standard of health and welfare services in Japan.

| 20 | Rare earth elements found in seabed near Japan's Minami-Torishima Island
Japanese researchers say mud extracted from the seabed off the island of Minami-Torishima contained rare earth elements vital for high-tech products.
About 50 tons of mud were mined from a depth of around 5,600 meters in February in a Cabinet Office test project. The area in the Pacific Ocean lies within Japan's exclusive economic zone.
Members of the team reported the results of their analysis on Friday.
They said an element called yttrium accounted for the highest proportion of the minerals at 29.9 percent, while dysprosium made up 4.6 percent.
Yttrium is used in semiconductor production devices, while dysprosium is used in magnets for electric vehicle motors.
The researchers said that medium and heavy rare earths, including yttrium and dysprosium, accounted for 53.9 percent of the minerals contained in the mud.
Among the 17 types of rare earths, the medium and heavy category is said to be rarer than the rest. Japan relies heavily on China for supplies of these elements.
They did not disclose the total volume of rare earths found in the mud.
Program Director Ishii Shoichi said the project team will conduct full-scale test-drilling next February to collect larger volumes of mud. The project's economic feasibility will be evaluated at that stage.
The team believes if mining can be conducted on an industrial scale, it would be immensely valuable for the country.
