RAVI: Tommy is seven years old, and he started helping us around the house when he was just four. Other parents thought it was too early to give their children chores, but kids are more capable than you think. We started with little things, like putting his toys in the toy box after using them, his dirty clothes in the laundry basket, or helping us set and clear the table. Obviously, it wasn't perfect, and we had to help him, but he learned that keeping a house clean takes work and that Mommy and Daddy do lots of things. Now he's seven, and he makes his bed and cleans up his room every day; he also vacuums, takes out the trash, waters the plants, and even helps with cooking. He's a little trooper, and we are so proud of him.
SOPHIE: My kids are teenagers now, and getting them to do chores is a real challenge. They enjoy walking our dog, Charlie, which is nice... But for anything else, I have to keep asking and asking. I often end up shouting at them to do the simplest tasks, like making their beds in the morning or mopping the bathroom floor after their showers. And the arguments we have about whose turn it is to clear the table or take the rubbish out are endless. It's all part of the fun of having teens, I suppose. But I guess part of the problem is that their dad and I did everything for them when they were little, so now they're lazy and don't appreciate everything we do for them.
EMILY: We have two boys, eight and ten, and we think it's very important they learn life skills so that one day they can run their own house. They must also learn the value of work. Every week, if they complete their chores on time and do a good job, they get their allowance –we tell them it's their salary. Sometimes, they can even earn some extra money to do some chores that aren't on their list, like washing my car or their dad's car. They learned the relationship between working and earning from a very early age. However, they also get other rewards from doing house chores, like being allowed to stay up watching TV for a little longer on some days. We believe these lessons will help them become responsible and independent adults. It's not just about the chores; it's about preparing them for the future.
OLIVER: We have four kids, so things at home can get very messy if you aren't organised. We use a chart with the days of the week and all the chores that we need to do each day. Every week, each child picks three chores, and we add one or two more to their list. For example, today, Ben is helping prepare the lunch boxes for school, Lydia is setting the dinner table and taking the rubbish out, Sylvia is clearing the table and loading the dishwasher, and David is mopping the kitchen and bathrooms. All our children started doing housework when they were just three years old. They know their mum and I need all the help we can get, as managing a household with four kids is too much for a couple of working parents. | 506 | 0 | Loading... |

Like every little girl I longed to be a bridesmaid and be a princess for the day, but my dream was not to be. The wheelchair had nothing to do with it, it was just that none of our circle of acquaintances was tying the knot at the time. Ten years down the line, my brother was getting hitched and they thought it would be nice for me to carry out my childhood fantasy. Trouble was that by then I was a jaded teenage cripple with a chip on her shoulder who viewed marriage as an oppressive institution. But the family twisted my arm and the big day found me wheeling up the aisle with a posy between my thighs, making feeble attempts at throwing confetti and trying to avoid making tyre marks on the wedding dress train.
After that day, I came to the conclusion that weddings were things best left avoided. I was just taking attention away from the happy couple for all the wrong reasons. I did go to a friend’s wedding recently, and I must say that they pulled out all the stops to make sure that I was adequately catered for. They laid on a special disabled bus to take me to the venue and there were ramps in all the right places. I mean, the whole thing must’ve cost them a fortune. But while I was no longer stealing the limelight for blocking the gangways and generally getting in the way, I was still a central figure as far as the couple’s bank balance were concerned, and that sort of think weighs on your conscience. I mean, when does it stop? Should the disabled go the whole hog and demand Braille orders of service, wider aisles and interpreters to sign the ceremony? For my part, I’m sticking with the avoidance strategy, so pardon me if I choose to live in sin. | 125 | 0 | Loading... |

Why do cats rub their heads?
Cats have scent glands along the tail, on each side of their head, on their lips, base of their tail, chin, near their sex organs, and between their front paws. They use these glands to scent mark their territory. When the cat rubs you, he is marking you with his scent, claiming you as "his."

Ali: Hey, you guys, I’ve been looking for you. I’ve got an idea – a study group. What do you
think? Are you interested?
Dina: Yes! I need a study group, in a big way.
Bea: Me too.
Ali: Do you think we have enough people here for a study group? I mean, there are only four
of us …
Bea: Sorry. Three of us. Chris can’t do study group. Right, Chris?
Chris: Yeah, there’s no way I can do a study group. I have an assignment and then I’m too
busy. But I’ll stay for this first meeting.
Ali: Should we try and get another group together with us for this?
Bea: No, I don’t think so. I think three is fine. Ideal size, really.
Dina: Me too.
Ali: OK, three people then. Four people for the first meeting. What next?
Bea: What about a meeting place? We can’t meet here in the library …
Ali: It’s not too bad, especially if those other people would go away.
Bea: But we can’t exactly ask them to leave, and people might get annoyed with us talking.
Dina: Can I say something here?
Ali: Sure, go ahead.
Dina: There’s a study hall next to the cafeteria. It’s almost always empty. Could we meet
there?
Ali: A study hall?! Who knew? Well, it sounds good to me.
Bea: Yeah. I’ve never been there but …
Ali: So, we ought to decide how long for and ho
Dina: I read somewhere that you should make t
seminar. That way we’d take it more seriously.
Bea: We may as well make it for this time since
Dina: Works for me.
Ali: Me too.
Chris: Hang on just a minute. I know I’m not goi
to have a seminar at this time every other week
Ali: Umm, no.
Bea: Thursday, no?
Ali: No, that’s on Thursday
Chris: Sorry. Forget I said anything.
Ali: Don’t worry about it.
Bea: So everyone agrees that this time is fine? Every week?
Ali: How long should we make it?
Bea: An hour?
Dina: Could we find a way of making it two hours?
Ali: Two hours seems a bit like … too much. To start with then?
Bea: Ninety minutes? Compromise?
Ali: Is that OK with you, Dina?
Dina: Fine by me.
Ali: OK, so I guess all we have left to decide is exactly what we’ll do when we meet. The final
exam is a way off. I guess we could review our notes, or practise learning things by heart.
Dina: I have a list of dos and don’ts actually that I got online. I could be a moderator, and we
could use the ideas as a starting point... | 681 | 4 | Loading... |
