Apptainer is ideal for containerizing OpenFOAM because it ensures secure, reproducible environments without requiring root access, crucial for HPC systems. It also supports direct hardware access, enabling seamless use of GPUs and MPI for parallel simulations in OpenFOAM.
✅ How to install it
1- get files and put it in openfoam-apptainer-packaging folder
git clone https://github.com/FoamScience/openfoam-apptainer-packaging.git openfoam-apptainer-packaging
2- install apptainer
sudo apt install -y apptainer
3-use python3.10 and create a virtual environment name venv_3_10
python3.10 -m venv venv_3_10
and source it:
source venv_3_10/bin/activate
then install ansible package:
python -m pip install ansible
4- run the ansible in openfoam-apptainer-packaging directory to create the apptainer image (.sif file) for openfoam
ansible-playbook build.yaml --extra-vars "original_dir=$PWD" --extra-vars "@config.yaml"
The image file will be generated in this path: openfoam-apptainer-packaging/containers/basic/
if you want to edit openfoam version, check config.yaml
✅ How to use apptainer
1- run apptainer
apptainer run [path_to_apttainer] OF_command
e.g. path_to_apptainer = containers/basic/opencfd-openfoam.sif
apptainer run openfoam-apptainer-packaging/containers/basic/opencfd-openfoam.sif blockMesh
2- run apptainer in bash mode
apptainer run path_to_apttainer bash
and then run openfoam commands.
3- if an Allrun script is there, then:
apptainer run path_to_apttainer ./Allrun | 661 |
