داستان از جایی شروع میشود که بچههای شهر یکییکی ناپدید میشوند. چند نوجوان که خودشان را "باشگاه بازندهها" مینامند، متوجه میشوند موجودی مرموز و بسیار ترسناک پشت این اتفاقات قرار دارد. این موجود معمولاً به شکل دلقکی به نام پنیوایز ظاهر میشود و از ترسهای افراد برای ترساندن آنها استفاده میکند.
گروه بچهها هرکدام با ترسهای شخصی خود روبهرو میشوند و کمکم تصمیم میگیرند بهجای فرار کردن، با پنیوایز مقابله کنند.
