Engineer Ashebir Balcha, CEO of Ethiopian Electric Power, explained to Tikvah Ethiopia during his site visit that the Koysha hydropower project is one of the major projects undertaken by his institution. He stated that when fully completed, the project will have a generating capacity of 1,800 megawatts and will supply over 6,750 gigawatt-hours of clean energy annually to the national power grid. He further explained that the Koysha hydropower dam will directly use 80 percent of the water released from Gibe III, and the remaining 20 percent will be collected from side streams to generate additional power. Project Manager Engineer Mebratu Teshome, for his part, mentioned that the dam has a height of 201.5 meters and a length of 1.8 kilometers, and is being constructed with Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC), similar to the GERD and Gibe III dams. Engineer Mebratu told Tikvah Ethiopia that 82 percent of the 7.72 million cubic meters of concrete required for the construction has been filled, and when this dam is completed, it will have a water holding capacity of 6.5 billion cubic meters, creating an artificial lake that will stretch 130 kilometers up to Gibe III and cover an area of 210 square kilometers. It was also stated that the project has a 40 percent plant factor (Capacity Factor). Engineer Eyuel Solomon, who is in charge of contract administration for the project, told us that a different approach was implemented during construction compared to the Gibe III experience. Instead of importing fully assembled steel pipes for the penstock and middle-level outlet, only raw steel plates were imported, and the work of bending, welding, and assembling was carried out on-site. This, he explained, not only reduced transportation costs but also fostered domestic technology transfer. Engineer Ashebir Balcha, CEO of Ethiopian Electric Power, stated that negotiations are underway with the Italian government and lending banks to secure the 500 million Euros needed to complete the project. The concrete work for the dam is expected to be fully completed by 2019 EC (June 2027), and the first turbine is anticipated to start operation by October 2021 EC (October 2028). The remaining five turbines will follow, with the project planned to be fully operational by 2022 EC (2029).
