I’m no Christian, nor do I have any desire to be, but you’re delusional if you can’t recognize and appreciate the profound impact Christianity has had on the West. For better or worse, and much of it I dislike, it remains part of our heritage, bound up with the history of our ancestors. That inheritance deserves to be respected, even if only at arm’s length. The early Northern Europeans who converted to Christianity also reshaped the religion according to their own social conditions. What had begun largely as an urban, multicultural, and multiethnic faith became, in much of medieval Europe, a religion deeply associated with landowning warrior aristocracies. That reflected the way of life that developed across much of Europe after the fall of the Western Roman Empire. For centuries, Christianity could present God as a supreme Father, a warrior, and a patriarch. In practice, many warrior societies could even interpret Jesus through the cultural lens of a war god, whether or not that interpretation was theologically correct.
