With the fearful strain that is upon me, day and night, if I did not laugh, I should die. And you need this medicine as much as I do.” Then, having amused himself, came the radical idea that would change the course of history. Lincoln came up with his plan that would later become the Emancipation Proclamation; the executive order that declared freedom for all enslaved people in Confederate territory. It didn’t end slavery overnight, but it turned the Civil War into a moral crusade and transformed the Union’s cause from merely preserving a nation to liberating its people. It was a bold stroke that reshaped America’s destiny, born, unexpectedly, after a moment of laughter. Let’s always remember that laughter is healing.
