Selam dear Hawassa American Corner families! To give you some more idea on "Nuclear Energy 101" This session comes through Purdue's Krach Institute for Tech Diplomacy, founded by Keith Krach, former Under Secretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment, and led by Michelle Giuda, former Assistant Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy. Kenya's Nuclear Power and Energy Agency is evaluating vendors for a planned 2,000-megawatt plant, with construction targeted for 2027. Ethiopia signed an action plan with Russia's Rosatom in September 2025 to advance its own reactor project. Tanzania is developing its uranium sector as a precursor to a domestic nuclear program. Small modular reactors, the focus of this session, are increasingly discussed across the continent as a tool for grid expansion and, notably, for powering the data centers behind AI infrastructure. Who may be interested in this seminar? STEM students and faculty get direct access to Purdue's Nuclear Engineering and Chemical Engineering departments, a rare opportunity for exchange with a leading U.S. research institution. Energy and infrastructure professionals will find the material useful given how actively this topic is moving in the region right now. Anyone working in tech or AI will be interested in the AI-energy nexus angle. One of the presenters, Dr. Lefteri Tsoukalas, directs Purdue's AI Systems Lab and has written directly on this intersection. We hope you will join us on Thursday afternoon for the seminar.
