The situation in Niamey was a mutiny. During the night of 28-29 August, 2026, units from Dosso, Ouallam, and Tera launched an offensive against government forces in Niamey.
Fighting was concentrated around Diori Hamani International Airport and Air Base 101, as well as the presidential palace and the CRTN television building. Members of the presidential guard, supported by Russia’s Africa Corps based at the airport, engaged the attackers and by the evening of 29 August had recaptured Base 101. The defence ministry declared the mutiny suppressed, stating that loyalist forces had restored full control of the capital.
The mutiny, involving troops from frontline towns, could have serious consequences for Niger’s war against militants.

What’s Really Happening in Niamey?
Nigerien authorities call the violence in Niamey a localized mutiny, but reports of fighting near the presidential palace, television station, and airport suggest a wider crisis. Rumors range from senior officers joining the mutineers to claims that Tchiani has been overthrown or that militant groups are involved. Little has been independently verified, but the situation is clearly serious.
