Menipu adalah dosa besar yang diharamkan dalam Islam, Allah ﷻ berfirman: ﴿وَيْلٌ لِّلْمُطَفِّفِينَ الَّذِينَ إِذَا اكْتَالُوا عَلَى النَّاسِ يَسْتَوْفُونَ وَإِذَا كَالُوهُمْ أَو وَّزَنُوهُمْ يُخْسِرُونَ﴾ “Kecelakaan besarlah bagi orang-orang yang curang, yaitu orang-orang yang apabila menerima takaran dari orang lain mereka minta dipenuhi, dan apabila mereka menakar atau menimbang untuk orang lain, mereka mengurangi” (QS. Al-Muṭaffifīn: 1–3), dan juga: ﴿وَلَا تَأْكُلُوا أَمْوَالَكُم بَيْنَكُم بِالْبَاطِلِ﴾ “Janganlah sebagian kamu memakan harta sebagian yang lain dengan jalan yang batil” (QS. Al-Baqarah: 188). Rasulullah ﷺ bersabda: «مَنْ غَشَّنَا فَلَيْسَ مِنَّا» “Barang siapa menipu kami, maka ia bukan termasuk golongan kami” (HR. Muslim), dan beliau juga bersabda: «آيَةُ الْمُنَافِقِ ثَلَاثٌ: إِذَا حَدَّثَ كَذَبَ، وَإِذَا وَعَدَ أَخْلَفَ، وَإِذَا اؤْتُمِنَ خَانَ» “Tanda orang munafik ada tiga: jika berbicara ia berdusta, jika berjanji ia mengingkari, dan jika dipercaya ia berkhianat” (HR. Bukhari-Muslim).
