🎮 Minecraft Hits Switch 2 on October 27 With Visual Upgrades
Mojang has confirmed Minecraft will launch natively on Nintendo Switch 2 on October 27, bringing a new "Vibrant Visuals" mode featuring enhanced lighting and shadows that takes advantage of the hardware.
The upgrade isn't universal — split-screen play and certain Marketplace content won't support the visual improvements. The Super Mario Mash-Up pack, exclusive to Nintendo versions, is being updated to support them.
Original Switch owners will have a digital upgrade path available, though Mojang hasn't confirmed whether it will be free or paid, saying "more details to follow." Save data will carry over from the original Switch version.

🎮 Black Ops 1 & 2 PS Ports Hit 11M Sales, $435M Revenue
The Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 and 2 ports for PlayStation, shadow-dropped on July 9, sold over 11 million combined copies in under a month, generating approximately $435 million, according to industry analyst Rhys Elliott.
Elliott estimates Black Ops 2 alone moved 8.2 million copies for ~$325M, while Black Ops 1 added 3 million copies for ~$110M. Both games — straight 1080p ports developed by Iron Galaxy — launched at $40, with PS Plus subscribers able to grab them for $20 until August 6.
Sony pocketed roughly $130 million from its 30% platform cut. Elliott called the release "low effort, low risk, high reward catalogue mining," noting that Microsoft and Activision faced "basically zero marketing or ongoing development costs." He added the results confirm Microsoft has no incentive to make Call of Duty Xbox-exclusive, and suggested a full Black Ops reboot "would do absolute gangbusters."
The next Call of Duty title, Modern Warfare 4, launches this October, with a multiplayer beta going live later this month.

🏢 EA's $55B Saudi-Led Buyout Closes, Debt Fears Loom
Electronic Arts is now a private company after its $55 billion acquisition closed on August 4. The deal was led by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, alongside Silver Lake and Jared Kushner's Affinity Partners. PIF will hold 93.4% of the new company. EA has been delisted from NASDAQ, and shareholders received $210 per share — a 25% premium over pre-announcement price.
The deal includes $20 billion in debt financing, making it the largest leveraged buyout in history, surpassing EA's own record. That debt load has raised concerns among developers about potential layoffs, studio closures, and game cancellations — though nothing has been confirmed. BioWare developers have reportedly voiced specific fears about cuts under the new ownership. CEO Andrew Wilson will remain in his role.
The deal was first announced in September 2025 and cleared European Commission review in July before closing.

🛠 Xbox 360 Games Could Come to PC by 2027–2028
A leaked document sent to developers, viewed by The Verge, suggests Microsoft is planning to bring Xbox 360 games to PC, Xbox handheld devices, and its next-gen console, codenamed Project Helix. The rollout is reportedly targeted for 2027–2028.
According to the document, developers would be able to set their own prices and choose whether to include their titles in Xbox Game Pass. The leak also details a disc-to-digital program: inserting a disc into a drive-equipped Xbox would grant a digital license tied to the owner's account, with the license transferring automatically if the disc changes hands. The beta for that program has reportedly been delayed to an unspecified date.
This follows Microsoft's recent launch of original Xbox backwards compatibility on PC, which began with four titles: Blinx: The Time Sweeper, Fuzion Frenzy, Conker: Live and Reloaded, and Crimson Skies: High Road.

🏢 Refactor Games Lays Off 85% of Staff After FIFA Title
Refactor Games, the studio behind Netflix's FIFA World Cup Launch Edition, has laid off approximately 80 people — around 85% of its staff — just two months after the game's June release. Co-founder Nathan Burba confirmed the cuts to GamesBeat.
The layoffs were reportedly triggered by co-owner Delphi Interactive pulling funding following the game's launch. Affected staff were notified on July 31 and received no severance pay, though the final day coincided with a scheduled payday.
The timing is striking: during Netflix's latest earnings call, management named FIFA World Cup Launch Edition one of the company's "most successful" cloud game launches ever on TV — without providing specific data to support the claim. The game itself received poor reviews, with critics calling it a "woefully undercooked" product.
Netflix has stated it remains committed to gaming long-term and recently reported 600% growth in some gaming metrics, though it acknowledged it is still in the early stages of building out the business.

💻 AMD and Nvidia GPU Prices Set to Rise This Week
Both AMD and Nvidia are raising graphics card prices, with increases set to begin this week. Nvidia's hike is reported at 20–30%, while AMD, according to market analyst Harukaze5719, is targeting "at least 10%" with no stated upper limit. AMD had reportedly been waiting for Nvidia to move first before announcing its own increase.
The rises apply to board partners, who must decide how much to pass on to consumers. Given current thin GPU margins, most are unlikely to absorb any portion of the cost.
The driver is surging memory prices. Samsung, a major GPU memory supplier, has already raised prices this year and plans a further 20% hike this month, with increases expected to continue until at least 2028. The knock-on effects are already visible: Xbox Series X/S prices rose at the start of the month, Nintendo has announced a Switch 2 price hike, and Sony raised PS5 prices earlier this year.

🏢 Sony Confirms It Will End PS5 Disc Production Despite Backlash
Sony CFO Lin Tao confirmed during the company's Q1 2026 earnings call that it will "cautiously move forward" with plans to end game disc manufacturing from January 2028, despite widespread criticism from players.
Tao cited the broad digitalization of content — not just in gaming — as the primary reason for the decision, while acknowledging that consumers have a "strong emotional attachment" to physical media. Sony says it wants to explore how to engage players within a future digital ecosystem, and has hinted that code-in-a-box releases could remain an option.
The financial case is clear: 82% of PS5 game sales, DLC, and microtransactions in Q1 2026 were digital, up from a 78% average across the 2025 fiscal year. Going all-digital also lets Sony keep 100% of first-party revenue and take a cut of third-party sales through its marketplace. A player-led boycott of Sony is planned for later in August, though the company has given no indication it will reverse course.

🏢 EA Acquisition Set to Close August 4
Electronic Arts confirmed in an SEC filing that all regulatory approvals for its $55 billion takeover have been obtained, with the merger expected to close on or about August 4, 2026.
The deal is led by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund alongside private-equity firm Silver Lake and Affinity Partners, founded by Jared Kushner. EA will be taken private as a result — ending its long run as a publicly traded company.
The acquisition is among the largest in gaming industry history and arrives as EA has faced multiple rounds of layoffs and project cancellations in recent years. The newly private company will also carry a significant debt load from the buyout, though how that will be managed has not been disclosed.

🛠 Elder Scrolls Online Delays Key Updates, Drops 2026–2027 Roadmap
Following significant layoffs at ZeniMax Online Studios, game director Nick Giacomini has published a new ESO content roadmap, confirming the MMORPG is "here to stay" while acknowledging several delays.
Update 51 slips one week to September 28, bringing a new challenge (The Nowhere Vault), a new Rumors game system, and quality-of-life improvements. Season Two launches October 21 with solo dungeons, Tamriel Tome upgrades, and the Greymoor Chapter going free on November 9.
Bigger content — including the combat and class refresh, Update 52, and the new Crimson Veldt trial — has been pushed to 2027. Giacomini cited a focus on "quality experiences over calendar dates."
"We are not looking to just 'maintain' the game. We are looking to grow it," Giacomini said.

🎮 Former BioWare Devs Reveal Supernatural Detective Game The Eventide
Studio Reset — formed by veterans of Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and The Long Dark — has unveiled its debut title, The Eventide, a supernatural mystery set in a stylized Canadian neon-noir city.
The game's core mechanic is the Parallax Deduction system: players assign investigators to cases, and outcomes shift depending on who's on the job. Each agent brings distinct skills and worldviews — a cryptozoologist, a people-reading ex-detective, a psychic energy perceiver, and others — which directly shape how case reports resolve. A word-based deduction system and fixed-camera exploration round out the design.
"Solving a case is not just about finding clues," said creative director Kaelin Lavallee. "It is about experiencing the cases through the characters' perspective to understand what those clues mean."
No release date has been set. The Eventide is coming to PC and is now available to wishlist on Steam.
