In Annihilation (2018), the mutant bear’s “voice” is one of the most disturbing effects of the Shimmer.
The bear attacks and kills Sheppard. Later, when it encounters the surviving women, it produces sounds resembling Sheppard screaming “Help me!”—which tricks them into initially thinking she might still be alive.
The implication is that the Shimmer’s genetic/biological “refraction” has caused part of Sheppard to become incorporated into the bear. Earlier, Lena explains that the Shimmer isn’t simply mutating organisms independently; it is mixing and refracting DNA and traits between living things. So the bear appears to have absorbed something from Sheppard when it killed her.
It’s deliberately ambiguous exactly what transferred. The creature may have incorporated her vocal anatomy, neural patterns, memories, or some combination of them. The especially horrifying interpretation is that the scream isn’t merely the bear learning to imitate her: some fragment of Sheppard may effectively continue to exist inside it, trapped in the moment of her death.
