France reported the first documented case of human disease caused by Shamonda virus.
Shamonda virus belongs to the family Peribunyaviridae, genus Orthobunyavirus, within the Simbu serogroup.
It is closely related to the Schmallenberg virus. It belongs to the same group as Schmallenberg virus, which causes reproductive disorders in livestock.
It is transmitted by biting midges.
It mainly affects cattle, though infections have also been identified in sheep, goats, horses and alpacas.
The virus is not known to transmit directly from animal to animal, other than during pregnancy when an infected animal can transmit the virus to the fetus.
It was first found in cattle in Nigeria in 1965.
It has since been found in parts of Africa, Europe and Asia
