Repost from Conatus
History does not move in circles, nor does it assume the form of circular striving; such harmony belongs not to history. It advances through turbulence, through sudden eruptions and catastrophes. Its course is too erratic to be conceived as a circle, too uneven, too jagged, too fraught with breaks and shocks. Tempting as the circular analogy may be for common sense, seeking to approximate an image of the essence of history, it remains a false geometry. History is not ordained by any divine Euclidean order, nor by the many geometries of man; it delights in rupture and in its own uneven advance, however orderly it may appear upon the surface. For the eye fond of comparative analogies, fleeing the discursive rationality of linear progress, the circular mode of understanding history commits itself to the same insipid fooleries, for it makes history assume the character of unanimous, symmetrical flow. Yet the obtrusiveness of history can only be grasped in images of earthquakes, floods, and demolitions.
