Indra (इन्द्र), the king of the gods and ruler of the heavens, stands as one of the most powerful deities. Armed with Vajra (वज्र), the indestructible thunderbolt forged by the celestial craftsman Tvashtar (त्वष्टा) from the bones of the sage Dadhichi (दधीचि), he is the warrior who defends order (rita - ऋत) against chaos (anrita - अनृत). Among his greatest feats is the slaying of Vritra (वृत्र), the demon serpent who imprisoned the waters of the world. Vritra born of chaos, sought to plunge the earth into endless drought, holding back the life-giving rivers. The gods, powerless against him, turned to Indra, placing their hopes in the wielder of thunder. With Vajra in hand, Indra descended upon Vritra, a storm unleashed against the serpent's towering might. Their battle raged across the heaves, shaking the very fabric of existence. Indra's thunder roared as he struck blow after blow, finally shattering Vritra's body and releasing the waters. Rivers burst forth, the earth flourished, and life was restored.
