For years, I lived with my pride; like a man in the winter of Saint Petersburg, pulling up the collar of his overcoat and convincing himself he isn't cold. And what a ridiculous performance it was. Every time I loved someone, I pretended it was only a small, passing incident; I said: "I'm not one of those people who need someone's presence." And then, at night, just when the city fell silent and the walls seemed to draw closer, I finally realized how skilled a liar a human being can be when pride is involved. I lost people. Not only because of their betrayal, not only because they grew cold, but because I always closed the door myself before they could fully see my heart. A person who has spent a lifetime afraid of being wounded sometimes turns off the lights of the house before anyone else can. But the truth is: Nothing exhausts a person more than pretending to need no one. I am tired. Tired of burying a piece of my heart with myself every single time and calling it "independence." Tired of saying, with a bitter smile after people leave, "It doesn't matter." While, in the middle of the night, the emptiness they left behind drives into the soul like a nail. And now, after all these years, after all these defeats, for the first time, I admit: I, too, wished someone would stay. Not for the excitement of love, not for that brief, deceptive passion of the first days, but for those simple, quiet moments... For a night when the world became unbearably heavy, there would be a hand to gently touch your shoulder and say: "I'm still here." What a humiliating confession for a man like me. All my life, I believed a person should endure his suffering with dignity and alone; but now I understand that some pains cannot be lived through alone. The human soul, no matter how proud it may be, longs at the end of the night for someone who understands its darkness. And perhaps the saddest part of it all is that I always understood love only when it was already too late. When people had grown cold, when they had already become tired, when they no longer carried that first look in their eyes, when the relationship had turned into an ordinary, colorless silence, and only then, among the ruins, did I realize how quietly, little by little, I had grown accustomed to their presence. Strange... As long as a person has something, he walks with pride; but all it takes is the sound of someone leaving echoing through the house, and then all his philosophies collapse. And now, if someone were to ask me what my greatest failure was, I wouldn't say betrayal, I wouldn't say loneliness, I wouldn't say all the women who left. I would say: That it took me years to find the courage to admit that I, too, wished to beloved.😊
