Under Pressure’s scene in Aftersun elevated the movie from a brillant one to a masterpiece. It’s one of the few empathetic, layered movies that depicts sorrow, grief and mental illness from a beautiful perspective.
In that scene,Callum’s daughter recollects momeries of her dad. Now that she’s an adult,a simple memory of her father dancing has a different meaning. As she’s more mature now,she realizes that this is more than a sweet moment between a father and daughter, she sees more than what her child self saw.
Now as the mature version of herself dances with him,it symbolises that she finally understood after all these years how disconnected her father was from reality and how consumed he was from depression
His daughter’s attempt of saving him and waking him up stems from her newfound understanding, but she can’t change the past and save her father.
During this scene,”Under Pressure” by David Bowie was playing. The lyrics includes the line “this is our last dance” which truly was despite an ageing Sophie desperately wishes she could’ve had more wisdom in her youth to save her father. As young Sophie pushes her father away,Callum pushes his daughter away in the memory that she reminisces as he was wearing the last shirt she saw him in

‘Cause love’s such an old-fashioned word
And love dares you to to care for the people on the edge of the night
And love dares you to change our way of caring about ourselves
This is our last dance
