In the years leading up to Hitler’s chancellorship, Catholics were far less likely to vote for the NSDAP because of the church’s influence during Weimar. Under Jewish-controlled Germany, the Catholic Church warned parishioners about the dangers of extremist parties, which meant that Christians were more likely to vote democratic. Yes, in the 1920s, Nationalism was viewed as an extremist ideology, just like it is today. Hitler eventually gained the support of Christians, but he always held firm the belief that religion was to be free of politicization by priests and clergymen. He also held firm that race (nation) should be primary and religion should be secondary. Even with the disintegration of our nation’s borders today, our true loyalty lies with our blood, our race, wherever we may be in the world.
