2	Could a large black cat like this be responsible for some of Australia’s reported big cat sightings? To me, it’s pretty clear what this animal is - But it’s also a good reminder of why I believe misidentifications account for a proportion of reported big cat sightings. A particularly large, dark-coloured feral cat seen briefly, at a distance, or in poor light could easily leave someone convinced they’d seen something much bigger. That said, I don’t believe this explains the majority of reports. There are countless accounts from credible witnesses who describe observing these animals at close range, sometimes for several minutes rather than just a fleeting glance. Those are the reports that continue to interest me the most, because they simply can’t be dismissed as someone catching a quick glimpse of a large feral cat. What are your thoughts? Could large feral cats explain more sightings than many people realise, or do you think there are reports that point to something else entirely?
