♦️ Vomiting blood ➡️ Hematemesis (indicates an upper GI source proximal to the ligament of Treitz).
♦️ Passage of black, tarry, foul-smelling stools ➡️ Melena (indicates upper GI bleeding or proximal small bowel bleeding).
♦️ Passage of bright red blood per rectum ➡️ Hematochezia (indicates a lower GI source, though massive rapid upper GI bleeding can also present this way).
