Cockpit comparison: The Airbus A350 versus the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. The Airbus A350 and the Boeing 787 Dreamliner both fly long-haul routes for airlines around the world. But the cockpits reflect two very different design philosophies. The most obvious difference is the flight controls. The A350 uses a sidestick on the outside of each pilot's seat. The 787 keeps a traditional control yoke in front of each pilot. In the A350, the flight computers will not allow the pilot to stall the aircraft or exceed safe limits, no matter how hard the sidestick is pulled. The aircraft protects itself. In the 787, the computers warn the pilot and resist unsafe inputs. But if the pilot pulls hard enough, those protections can be overridden. Boeing's philosophy is that the pilot always has the final say. The A350 also has a clean, open layout with no central column. Each pilot has a pull-out tray table for meals, paperwork, or laptops. Ethiopian Airlines recently confirmed orders for additional Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft to expand its international network and modernize its fleet.
