Location: Peoria, Illinois - downtown near Four Points by Sheraton, 500 block Hamilton Boulevard Date: May 8, 2026 - around 6:35 p.m. Ashley N. Stenson aged 42 from Atlanta flew in for a wedding and met her cousin at the airport. Her ex boyfriend Cortez White, 41 from St. Louis, showed up unexpectedly, took her by force in his pickup. She texted family saying he would not let her go and threatened to kill her; relatives alerted police with full descriptions. Officers found them on the sidewalk outside the hotel. When the officer approached, White pulled a 9mm pistol, shot Ashley multiple times including in the head while standing over her. He then turned and aimed directly at the officer. A Hillsborough County jury has convicted 52-year-old Kamal Padlowski of second-degree murder in the death of 47-year-old Melvin Montero Jimenez, killed at a Ruskin marina over Memorial Day weekend 2024. Prosecutors say Padlowski met Jimenez at a bar near Bahia Beach Boulevard and invited him back to his boat to keep drinking. Surveillance video shows Padlowski shoving Jimenez off the boat and onto the dock, where he struck his head on a fiberglass dock box and went motionless. The video then shows Padlowski grabbing the unconscious man by the ankles, dragging him across the dock and throwing him into the water. Jimenez never resurfaced. Padlowski threw his flip-flops in after him. Bystanders called 911. When deputies arrived, Padlowski was sitting on the dock with two kitchen knives stabbed upright into the wood. A deputy asked if anyone had been shot. "I wish," he answered. A witness told deputies Padlowski said he thought he might have killed somebody, then pointed to the water.
