The Marriage of Sati and Shiva
Devi Sati was the daughter of the great king Daksha Prajapati, who was one of the mind-born sons of Lord Brahma. Daksha was proud of his noble status and highly disliked Lord Shiva, whom he considered a dirty, unconventional ascetic unworthy of marrying into royalty. Sati, however, was deeply devoted to Shiva. Disobeying her father’s wishes, she married Lord Shiva and moved with him to Kailash Parvat (Mountain), the holy abode of the Lord.
The Grand Yagna and Daksha's Insult
Sometime later, King Daksha organized a grand yagna (a massive religious sacrifice and congregation) and invited all the gods, sages, and kings of the universe. Because of his deep-seated hatred for Shiva, he deliberately left Shiva and Sati off the guest list.
When Sati came to know of the grand ritual, she longed to visit her maternal home. Shiva gently dissuaded her, reasoning that going to an event where they were intentionally uninvited would only result in disrespect. However, driven by familial love, Sati ignored his advice and traveled to the ceremony alone.
Upon her arrival, her fears came true. The atmosphere was cold, and none of her relatives welcomed her except for her mother, Prasuti, who embraced her warmly. To make matters worse, Daksha publicly insulted and humiliated Lord Shiva in front of the entire assembly.
The Immolation and Shiva's Wrath
Unable to bear the severe humiliation of her husband, Sati was consumed by grief and anger. Declaring that her body—born of Daksha—was now tainted, she invoked her yogic powers and jumped into the sacrificial fire at the altar, immolating herself.
When the news of Sati’s death reached Kailash, Lord Shiva was struck with immense grief and fury. He tore a lock of his hair and created Veerbhadra and Bhadrakali, two fearsome deities, commanding them to destroy the sacrifice. They marched upon Daksha’s kingdom, decapitated the King, and completely annihilated the sacrificial canopy.
The Separation and the Shakti Peethas
Deeply sorrowful, Shiva picked up the half-burnt body of his beloved wife and began wandering the universe, performing the Tandava (the dance of cosmic destruction). The universe trembled under his grief.
To save the cosmos and break Shiva's blinding attachment, Lord Vishnu unleashed his Sudarshana Chakra, which severed Sati’s body into pieces. As Shiva carried her, 51 parts of her body fell at various locations across the subcontinent. These sacred spots became the Shakti Peethas, powerful centers of divine feminine energy.
Eventually, Shiva calmed down. Out of compassion and at the request of the gods, he forgave Daksha. The King was restored to life by attaching the head of a goat) to his body, allowing him to humbly complete his yagna in the presence of the deities.
Rebirth as Maa Shailaputri
In her next life, Devi Sati was reincarnated as the daughter of Himavan, the King of the Himalayas (the God of Mountains). Because of her birth to the mountain king, she was named Shailaputri. In this incarnation, she is also beautifully known as Parvati and Hemavati.
As Maa Hemavati, she revealed her supreme power to the Vedic gods, humbling their pride and showing them that all cosmic strength originates from the Supreme Divine Energy (Shakti). Through intense, thousands-of-years-long penance and unwavering devotion, Maa Shailaputri won back the heart of Lord Shiva and married him once again. | 631 |
