"The ribbon eel is a small and colorful moray eel species which is frequently seen in the shallow coral reefs of Indonesia. The bird that nearly went extinct just won New Zealand’s bird of the year. New Zealand’s karure, or Chatham Island black robin, has been named the 2026 Bird of the Year after a record 105,000 people took part. The win is especially remarkable because the species once came terrifyingly close to extinction. In 1980, only five black robins remained, including a single breeding pair, Old Blue and Old Yellow. A pioneering conservation programme, including cross-fostering their eggs with another bird species, helped bring the population back. Today, around 350 adult black robins remain, all descended from the last breeding female, Old Blue. The species is still classified as Threatened - Nationally Critical in New Zealand, and conservationists are working to create additional safe habitat. Wild horizons
