Several centuries ago, the Nama people of southern Africa used particularly clever baboons as goat herders. These animals took their duties seriously—keeping the herd together and promptly warning of danger upon spotting predators. Occasionally, a baboon would choose the largest goat and ride it like a mount. Some European settlers in the region later adopted this practice; the last documented case, from 1961, describes a female baboon named Ala working on a farm in Namibia.

The chess piece known as the "queen" originally moved just one square diagonally. In the 15th century, its power dramatically increased, evolving into the formidable moves we know today. In the West, the piece was even officially renamed the "queen"—even though historically, the queen was more akin to a vizier or prime minister.

A tractor tows downed German Heinkel He-111 bomber across the Cunliffe-Owen Aircraft factory site in Southampton. The aircraft, from the 6th squadron of Luftwaffe bomber wing KG 55 (6./KG55), was shot down and made a forced landing on August 6, 1940, near the village of Bramber in Sussex. It was later transported by road nearly 100 km to the factory. On September 11, 1940, the facility suffered a German air raid, and the hangar housing the bomber was destroyed.

Plato once wrote: «To fear death, is no other than to believe oneself wise when one is not — to suppose one knows what one does not know. For no one knows what death truly is, or even whether it might be the greatest blessing for a person; yet people fear it as if they were certain it were the greatest evil. Isn’t this the most shameful ignorance — to assume knowledge of what one clearly does not understand?»

Lake Nyasa separated German Tanzania and British Malawi. For ten years, rival naval captains—Germany’s Berndt and Britain’s Edmund Rhodes—patrolled the lake, becoming close friends. When Britain declared war on Germany in August 1914, Rhodes struck first. His ship, the *Gwendolen*, ambushed the German *Hermann von Wissmann* while it was docked for repairs. A single salvo disabled it. Berndt fled in a dinghy, rowed to the *Gwendolen*, and shouted, “Good God, Edmund, are you drunk?” Rhodes explained: a quick attack would end the war on the lake before either had their first wartime drink. Berndt, impressed, surrendered. The two friends then went ashore to celebrate with a drink. This brief clash marked the First World War’s first naval engagement.

The word "cucumber" comes from Greek, where it was derived from a term meaning "unripe." That's because cucumbers are typically eaten before they fully ripen.
