Behind the house lay a garden that, from early childhood, became a source of inspiration for the artist. Throughout his short life, he would create plein-air sketches there, later used in larger compositions. The artist meticulously and precisely renders on canvas everything his eye observes — the lush greenery of plants adorned with white, red, and pink blooms, the slightly ajar bluish shutters, the open white window frames, and the parted lace curtains revealing the view within the window's opening. In front of them, alongside a young man, stands Monet’s cousin, Jeanne Marguerite. The expanse of sea is dotted with sailing vessels of various sizes. Together with the band of sky—divided into cloudy and clear sections—half the canvas is taken up by the terrace itself, adorned with vibrant gladioli and nasturtiums.
