as a girl, education gives you choices. I believe choice is the most important thing to have. your whole life depends on it. the system isn't made for you, and being incompetent on top of that is a slap to your future self. (it's really disappointing to have the access generations of women didn't have and not use it to your advantage.)

I think I was just too old for this book. The entire time I was reading I kept screaming “JUST TALK TO EACH OTHER.” Like genuinely, if Connell and Marianne had one proper conversation, this whole book would’ve been 40 pages long. I get that the miscommunication is kind of the point, but after a while it just became frustrating. I still liked Sally Rooney’s writing style though, even tho there were no speech marks which required sometime to get used to. Also she does an amazing job of moving easily between two very different characters. She stays in third person but it is always clear whether or not we are viewing the world from Marianne’s or Connell’s perspective. But honestly, the ending was good.

I read this story just yesterday, The Lottery by Shirley Jackson. In simple terms, it is about a small American town gathering on a bright summer morning for their annual lottery. She writes it all so warmly, so ordinarily, the kind of scene that makes you feel completely at ease. And then the ending arrives, and everything you thought you were reading falls apart. What unsettles me most is how human the reaction to it is. Nobody in that town sees anything wrong. The cruelty is not hidden from them, it happens every year, in broad daylight. And still, it does not register as cruelty at all. It is simply a random day in June ( "lottery in June, crops will be heavy soon" ). It is simply the lottery. It is simply how things are done to get success throughout the year, it is simply tradition, until it affects them personally. It made me think about how much suffering around us we have decided not to see, not because we are evil, but because it has not touched us yet.
