On October 10, 2025, the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize to María Corina Machado, Venezuelan opposition leader and advocate for democracy. Described as “a brave and committed champion of peace,” Machado was honored for her persistent efforts to promote democratic rights and a peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy in Venezuela. Born in 1967 in Caracas, she founded the Atenea Foundation in 1992 to help street children and later co-founded Súmate in 2002 to advance free and fair elections. Elected to the National Assembly in 2010 but expelled in 2014, Machado now leads Vente Venezuela and co-founded Soy Venezuela to unite pro-democracy movements. Despite being barred from the 2024 presidential race and facing threats, she continues her activism from hiding, inspiring Venezuelans to fight for democratic change.
