Ever wondered what creates those dancing patterns of light on the seafloor in clear water? They’re called caustics, formed as light bends and reflects at the air–water surface. The moving water acts like a constantly shifting magnifying glass. MindOrbit

The arrow turns a full 180 degrees, but somehow still points to the right. It only appears to point left when you see it in a mirror. This ingenious optical illusion was created by Japanese mathematician Kokichi Sugihara of Meiji University. MindOrbit

In the 1990s, Canadian ecologist Suzanne Simard uncovered something surprising beneath the forest floor. While studying managed forests in British Columbia, she noticed that Douglas firs grew more slowly when nearby birch trees were removed. To find out why, Simard used radioactive carbon isotopes to track nutrients. She discovered that mycorrhizal fungi form underground networks linking tree roots. Through these fine fungal threads, trees—even of different species—can exchange carbon, water, nutrients and chemical signals. Simard also found that older, larger trees can act as hubs, supplying vital resources to young saplings. Removing them may weaken the network and harm the wider forest. Her research challenged the view that forests are shaped by competition alone. Trees can support one another and alert nearby plants to threats such as drought, disease and insect attacks. A forest may look quiet above ground, but below the surface, its trees are connected by a complex, living network. MindOrbit
