📜 The DAO: $150 Million Dream That Forked Ethereum
Crypto legends & cautionary tales
On 30 April 2016, The DAO launched with a 28-day token sale, built mostly by Christoph Jentzsch. It raised over $34 million by 10 May, $100 million by 15 May, and reached over $150 million from more than 11,000 investors by 21 May, nearly 14% of all Ether issued.
Despite warnings in a May 2016 paper about security flaws and a known 'recursive call' bug, on 17 June 2016 attackers exploited it, draining 3.6 million Ether (about $50 million) of the 11.5 million committed. Griff Green organized the White Hat Group to save remaining funds.
On 20 July 2016, Ethereum hard-forked to return the funds, splitting into Ethereum and Ethereum Classic. By September 2016, Poloniex delisted DAO tokens, Kraken followed in December, and in July 2017 the SEC examined whether it violated securities laws. The DAO was defunct.
🧭 The lesson: Unaudited code and 'transparent' systems can still hide fatal flaws—never risk money you cannot afford to lose.

📜 The Ghost Who Built Bitcoin and Vanished
Crypto legends & cautionary tales
On 31 October 2008, Satoshi Nakamoto published the bitcoin white paper on the metzdowd.com mailing list. On 18 August 2008, he had registered bitcoin.org. On 9 January 2009, he released version 0.1 of the software and launched the network with the genesis block, rewarding 50 bitcoins and embedding The Times headline from 3 January 2009 about a bank bailout.
Nakamoto kept coding until mid-2010, then handed the source code repository and alert key to Gavin Andresen. In 2011 he emailed developer Mike Hearn saying he had moved on to other things, and was never heard from again. He claimed on his profile to be a 37-year-old man born 5 April 1975 living in Japan.
His wallet, untouched since 2010, holds an estimated 1.1 million bitcoins, worth nearly $135 billion as of 14 July 2025. His true identity remains unknown.
🧭 The lesson: Control of your private keys determines control of your money — lose access or vanish, and even billions sit frozen forever.

📜 Mt. Gox: From 70% of Bitcoin Trades to Collapse
Crypto legends & cautionary tales
In January 2007 Jed McCaleb registered mtgox.com for a card-trading site. After reading about bitcoin in July 2010, he relaunched it as a bitcoin exchange on 18 July 2010. In March 2011 he sold it to Mark Karpelès, a French developer living in Japan.
By 2013 Mt. Gox handled over 70% of world bitcoin trades, once moving 150,000 bitcoins a day. But problems piled up: a June 2011 hack dropped bitcoin's price to one cent, affecting over $8,750,000 in accounts; October 2011 lost 2,609 BTC to bad addresses; US authorities seized $2.9 million and $2.1 million in 2013.
On 7 February 2014 withdrawals were halted. By April, bankruptcy liquidation began. Hundreds of thousands of bitcoins vanished; WizSec concluded in April 2015 that theft from the hot wallet began in late 2011, though 200,000 bitcoins were later recovered.
🧭 The lesson: Holding funds on an exchange means trusting its security and management — understand custody risks before leaving assets anywhere long-term.
