Blockchains in 5 minutes
The simplest possible explanation of how it actually works
In short: A blockchain is a shared digital notebook made of blocks linked by special codes called hashes. Each block depends on the one before it, so past records are very hard to secretly change.
How it works
• A block is a batch of transactions; a hash is a unique fingerprint made from its exact contents.
• Each new block stores the previous block's hash, chaining them together like links in a rope.
• Changing one old block changes its hash, breaking every hash after it, so everyone can notice the break.
• Miners build and add new blocks for a reward; nodes keep full copies of the chain and check it's correct.
🧮 Example: Ada sends ₦5,000 to Musa inside Block 102, which gets a hash. Block 103 stores that hash. If anyone later fakes Ada's payment, Block 102's hash changes, breaking the link to 103 and beyond, so other computers reject it.
✅ Try this today: Visit a free blockchain explorer website (like blockchain.com/explorer), open any block, and find its hash and the previous block's hash.
⚠️ Common mistake: Thinking blockchain means 'unchangeable magic.' It's really that changing old data breaks the hash chain, which other computers quickly detect and reject.

Emergency fund: how much, where, when
The safety net that buys you all your future choices
In short: An emergency fund is cash set aside for real emergencies, so a job loss or medical bill never forces you into debt. Build this before investing a single naira elsewhere.
How it works
• Add up true monthly essentials: rent, food, transport, data, minimum debt payments; ignore wants.
• Multiply that baseline by 3 to 6 months depending on how stable your income and job are.
• Keep it in a separate savings account or money market fund you can reach within a day or two, not your spending account.
• Once you hit your target, stop adding more there and redirect new savings toward other goals like investing.
🧮 Example: Ada's essentials cost 90,000 naira monthly. Her income is steady, so she targets 3 months: 270,000 naira. She keeps it in a separate savings account, untouched, and stops adding once she reaches that number.
✅ Try this today: List your true monthly essential expenses on paper or your phone notes, without checking any account or app.
⚠️ Common mistake: Mixing emergency cash with spending money, so it quietly disappears; fix this by keeping it in a separate, clearly labeled account.
