| 5 | Whenever I read research papers, I find myself thinking about more than just sample sizes, biases, or whether the methodology holds up. I also think about the replication crisis.
Most discussions treat it as a methodological problem.
Tighten the statistics, preregister studies, eliminate questionable research practices, and science becomes more reliable. But this paper suggests that perhaps we have been asking psychology to behave like a science of simple, stable objects, when its subject matter is anything but simple.
Human behavior exists in context. The smallest change in an environment, a participant's expectations, or the meaning they attach to a situation can produce a different outcome. In that light, a failed replication isn't always evidence that the original finding was wrong. Sometimes it's evidence that the phenomenon itself is sensitive to context, and that sensitivity is part of what we're trying to understand.
I think that's a much more interesting way of looking at the replication crisis. It shifts the conversation away from asking whether a study "worked" and toward asking whether our theories are actually capable of capturing the complexity of the thing they're trying to explain. | 9 | Hey guys. So as a Woman, that really avoids "men vs women" kinda conversations cause they're sooo pointless, I'm trying a different approach for the genuine, open minded and immediately triggered lemayhonu sewoch.
A lot of us live in a good pocket, tech, creative circles, liberal spaces, where things can honestly look fine for women. We pick our friends, our rooms, the people we keep close, and inside that it's easy to think it's mostly solved. But there are mindsets that follow each of us everywhere. Even me, and many women.
For men that don't have our experience demo it's easier for that mindset to slip in as something that's okay. From this "safe bubble" sinweta demo the world (including other women) are there to put us down in many ways.
