Wally Amos, the charismatic founder of Famous Amos cookies, has died at age 88, according to a statement signed by his children. In the statement, his children said the cause was complications of dementia. “He was a true original Black American hero,” said the statement, signed “Sarah, Michael, Gregory and Shawn Amos.” “With his Panama hat, kazoo, and boundless optimism, Famous Amos was a great American success story, and a source of Black pride,” the statement said. Americans, and especially those under age 35, are changing their tune on alcohol use, with a growing share endorsing the view that moderate drinking is bad for health — and a new study backs them up. According to a Gallup poll released Tuesday, almost half of Americans, 45%, say that having one or two alcoholic drinks a day is bad for a person's health. That's the highest percentage yet recorded by the survey, which has been conducted 10 times since 2001. Only 8% of adults reported that they thought moderate drinking had a positive effect on health, an all-time low. More younger adults are choosing to abstain, too, as nonalcoholic "mocktails" become widely available and people feel less social pressure to drink. Two years after Italian volleyball player Paola Egonu stepped down from the national volleyball team after racial abuse on social media became too distracting, she has become the target of racism once again. Egonu, 25, who is of Nigerian heritage, was born in Padua and has Italian citizenship. A mural by an Italian street artist was intended to celebrate not only Egonu's return to the team, which beat the United States to win a gold medal in women's volleyball, but also her being named MVP at Paris 2024. The mural, titled called "Italian-ness," was unveiled Monday and depicted Egonu in full flight, spiking a volleyball bearing the words "Stop to racism, hate, xenophobia, ignorance." The World Health Organization on Wednesday declared the ongoing mpox outbreak in Africa a global health emergency. WHO convened its emergency mpox committee amid concerns that a deadlier strain of the virus, clade Ib, had reached four previously unaffected provinces in Africa. This strain had previously been contained to the Democratic Republic of Congo. Since the beginning of this year, more than 17,000 cases and more than 500 deaths have been reported in 13 countries in Africa, according to the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which classifies the outbreak as a "very high risk event." A man suing Walt Disney Parks and Resorts for the wrongful death of his wife is facing a new legal hurdle: Disney is trying to get it dismissed and sent to arbitration — because he signed up for Disney+ years earlier. Court documents show that the company is trying to get the $50,000 lawsuit dismissed because the plaintiff, Jeffrey Piccolo, signed up for a one-month trial of the streaming service Disney+ in 2019, which requires trial users to arbitrate all disputes with the company. Company lawyers also claim that because Piccolo used the Walt Disney Parks’ website to buy Epcot Center tickets, Disney is shielded from a lawsuit from the estate of Piccolo’s deceased wife, Kanokporn Tangsuan, who died of a reaction to severe food allergies. Abortion bans that states have enacted since Roe v. Wade was overturned have spurred fear among women of reproductive age in the United States, and the concerns are widespread across the political spectrum, according to new survey data from independent source for health policy researcher KFF. About 1 in 7 women ages 18 to 49 say they have had an abortion, the KFF survey found. The experience was similarly common among women across the political spectrum; about 14% of Democratic women and 12% of Republican women say they have had an abortion. But about two-thirds of women of reproductive age worry that abortion bans could affect the safety of a potential future pregnancy for them or someone close to them, or threaten their livelihood if an abortion is needed.
