Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón said Thursday he'll recommend that a judge resentence Lyle and Erik Menendez nearly 30 years after the brothers were convicted of the murders of their parents, Jose and Kitty, and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
A judge will ultimately decide whether to resentence the brothers.
The reexamination of the case comes more than 35 years after the fatal shooting of Jose and Kitty Menendez in their Beverly Hills home. Their sons, Lyle and Erik, who were 21 and 18 at the time, were arrested less than a year later, in 1990, and accused of first-degree murder.
At their high-profile trials decades ago – one of the first cases to be televised – the brothers did not deny killing their parents, but argued they should not be convicted because they acted in self-defense after enduring a lifetime of abuse by their father.
A first trial ended in a mistrial after jurors deadlocked on the charges. In their second trial, much of the defense evidence about sexual abuse was excluded. The brothers were found guilty in 1996 and sentenced to life in prison.

Olivia Munn is the latest star to model for shapewear brand Skims, and in the campaign images the actor shows her mastectomy scars as she continues her fight against breast cancer.
In the photographs, taken by artist Vanessa Beecroft, Munn models products by the Kim Kardashian-founded lingerie and shapewear brand. Launched in the final week of Breast Cancer Awareness Month as a partnership with the Susan G. Komen organization, the campaign encourages women to pursue early screenings, according to a press release. Munn has advocated for people to calculate their breast cancer risk score, which helped lead to her diagnosis early last year.
"This cause is deeply personal to me, and I'm proud to help drive awareness and conversation around it," Munn said in the release. "SKIMS' commitment to empowerment and community aligns perfectly with the message of this campaign, which is all about confidence, comfort, and feeling your best self. That's exactly how I felt shooting this."

Every year, thousands of South Koreans – mostly middle-aged men – die quietly and alone, cut off from their family and friends. It sometimes takes days or even weeks before their bodies are found.
These are the country’s “lonely deaths,” known as godoksa in Korean. It’s part of a larger problem of loneliness and isolation across the country, an issue so pressing the government is pulling out all the stops to fight it.
In the bustling capital Seoul, city authorities announced they would spend 451.3 billion won (nearly $327 million) over the next five years to “create a city where no-one is lonely.”
Their new initiatives include loneliness counselors available on a 24/7 hotline, an online platform for similar counseling, as well as follow-up measures including in-person visits and consultations, according to the metropolitan government.
“Loneliness and isolation are not just individual problems, but tasks that society must solve together,” Seoul mayor Oh Se-hoon said in a news release.
