A 102-year-old Holocaust survivor whose family was murdered at Auschwitz is the cover star for the July/August edition of Vogue Germany. Margot Friedländer, née Bendheim, was born in Berlin in 1921. According to a brief bio on the website of Berlin’s Jewish Museum, Friedländer spent the early part of the war with her mother and younger brother Ralph after her parents separated. They had plans to flee the country but in 1943 her brother was arrested by the Gestapo. Their mother confronted the Gestapo, which led to her being deported to Auschwitz with her son, where they were both murdered. But before leaving, she left behind a message for her daughter that read: “Try to make your life.” In her interview with Vogue Germany, Friedländer said: “I am grateful. Grateful that I made it. For being able to fulfill my mother’s wish. That I have made my life.” Vogue Germany said they’d met with Friedländer four times this year and that the cover pictures were shot in April at the Botanical Garden in Berlin. Donald Sutherland, a veteran actor known for roles in "M*A*S*H," "Klute" and "The Hunger Games," has died, according to a statement from his agency CAA. He was 88. Sutherland died Thursday in Miami after a long illness, according to his agency. "With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away," Kiefer Sutherland, Donald Sutherland's son, wrote in a post on Instagram Thursday. "I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film. Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly." Kiefer Sutherland continued to write that his father "loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that. A life well lived." Near the edge of the Phoenix metro’s urban sprawl, Dream City Christian School is in the midst of a major expansion. The private school, which is affiliated with a local megachurch where former President Donald Trump held a campaign rally this month, recently broke ground on a new wing that will feature modern, airy classrooms and a pickleball court. It’s a sign of growth at a school that has partnered with a Trump-aligned advocacy group, and advertises to parents by vowing to fight “liberal ideology” such as “evolutionism” and “gender identification.” Just a few miles away, the public Paradise Valley Unified School District is shrinking, not expanding. The district shuttered three of its schools last month amid falling enrollment, a cost-saving measure that has disrupted life for hundreds of families. Arizona was the first state in the country to enact a universal “education savings account” program – a form of voucher that allows any family to take tax dollars that would have gone to their child’s public education and spend the money instead on private schooling. A CNN investigation found that the program has cost hundreds of millions of dollars more than anticipated, disproportionately benefited richer areas, and funneled taxpayer funds to unregulated private schools that don’t face the same educational standards and antidiscrimination protections that public schools do. In 2022, a man named Daniel Smith, "who was believed to be the last surviving child of an enslaved person," died at 90 years old, according to the New York Times. The article notes it's difficult to know if there are other children of enslaved people still living. Wilbur B. Bell says he's among those unaccounted descendants. "We might be the only people in the United States who really can say that their parent, or parents, were born in slavery," he told CNN, adding that he didn't know his father had been born into slavery until "probably about 50 years ago." "We didn't really dwell on it," Bell said of when he first found out. "It was something at the time. That was it." But Bell said this year, a combination of curiosity to learn more about his family history and an appreciation for its historical significance compelled him to do something he's never done in 83 years — visit the town in Georgia where he says his father was born. Environmental protesters sprayed Britain’s most famous prehistoric structure, Stonehenge, with orange powdered paint a day before huge crowds are expected to gather there for the summer solstice. A video posted on X by Just Stop Oil shows two of the group’s activists spraying the landmark using fire extinguishers. The action took place around 12 p.m. local time at the ancient site near Salisbury in the southwest of England, Wiltshire Police said in a statement. Police arrested the two protesters “on suspicion of damaging the ancient monument,” the statement said. Families that lost loved ones in two Boeing 737 Max crashes said on Wednesday that the company committed the "deadliest corporate crime in US history" and asked the Justice Department to fine the company the maximum $24 billion it could face in a criminal trial. The families wrote to the Department of Justice asking for the fine as the US government considers criminal prosecution of Boeing. The Justice Department said last month that Boeing's recent string of safety lapses and mishaps constituted a violation of its 2021 agreement that allowed the company to avoid charges for 737 Max crashes in Indonesia in October 2018 and in Ethiopia in March 2019 that killed 346 people. It was a shock when Michael Mosley, a doctor and well-known TV presenter in the UK, was found dead earlier this month after hiking in scorching temperatures on the Greek island of Symi. But it is now one of a series of tourist deaths and disappearances in Greece as the country endures a powerful, early summer heat wave with temperatures pushing above 104 degrees Fahrenheit. On Saturday, a Dutch tourist was found dead on the island of Samos. The following day, the body of an American tourist was found on Mathraki, a small island west of Corfu. Albert Calibet, another American tourist, has been missing since he set out for a hike on June 11 on Amorgos. And two French women disappeared on Sikinos after going for a walk. “There is a common pattern,” Petros Vassilakis, the police spokesman for the Southern Aegean, told Reuters, “they all went for a hike amid high temperatures.” Some scientists say what’s happening in Greece offers a warning sign about the impacts of extreme heat on the body, and in particular the brain. Research has traditionally focused on the impact of extreme heat on muscles, skin, the lungs and the heart, but “the brain, for me, is the key to it all,” said Damian Bailey, a physiology and biochemistry professor at the University of South Wales. Police officers rescued six pit bull puppies who were tied inside a bag by a woman attempting to sell them on a street in Queens, New York. The 44-year-old was arrested and charged with six counts of torturing and injuring an animal, among other charges.

Willie Mays, the dynamic baseball Hall of Famer who shined in all facets of the game and made a dramatic catch in the 1954 World Series, has passed away at the age of 93, the San Francisco Giants announced. Known as “The Say Hey Kid” for the way he enthusiastically greeted others, Mays was a five-tool player with the rare ability to hit for power and for average while also excelling at running, throwing and fielding. In 23 major league seasons, mostly with the New York Giants and the San Francisco Giants, he finished with 660 career home runs – then the second most behind legend Babe Ruth.
