After all, ambitious utopian fantasies often inspire more practical innovations. Take Ron Herron's Walking City concept from the Archigram group: a total brain-bender that shatters every convention about cities as fixed locations. This nomadic metropolis could constantly migrate toward better conditions like some gigantic living organism, ignoring all borders. The design featured detachable modules connected to the main structure — imagine a herd of mega-structures crawling in formation across the landscape. Completely unfeasible? Sure. But it works brilliantly as a metaphor for new nomadism in our unstable world. Or perhaps in a world so stable that even these insect-like cities could safely navigate complex terrain without worry.	250

Back when The Book was just starting out on Kickstarter, the preview pages were filled with classic Lorem Ipsum placeholder text. This led to a surprising number of people asking, "Hold on... is this in Latin? Will there be an English version?" These ideas are older than any modern religion, and possibly even older than the division of people into farmers and herders, or gatherers and hunters. Eating is not just a matter of survival or taste. It is a system of beliefs. It is ideology. If that sounds like an exaggeration, just think about your own reaction to the idea of eating protein made from insects. Or the idea of surviving on nothing but spinach and broccoli. Reactions to food are rarely neutral. They are often deeply emotional, personal, and even moral. Many people have heard of the so-called "shock foods" that often horrify outsiders. Lutefisk, casu marzu, and jellied meat dishes can seem almost grotesque if you did not grow up with them. But in reality, almost any food that is unfamiliar tends to make us uneasy. Unfamiliarity creates distance and discomfort. On the other hand, finding familiar, ordinary food when you are far from home can feel incredibly grounding. It is like feeling solid earth beneath your feet. A reminder that something in this strange place still makes sense to you. And since food is such an essential part of human culture, it should come as no surprise that The Last Book includes an entire chapter dedicated to it	164
14	A while back we stumbled across a TikTok video where a religious conspiracy theorist reviewed The Book — and found things in it we honestly never would've imagined. Seriously, it’s hard to believe people like this are being serious. We put together our own edit of the best moments from that video… and boom, instant commercial material!	120
15	+1 In The Black Book, we also explore the strange side of weapons innovation. Just as civilian technologies are often adapted for military use, military inventions sometimes find peaceful applications (shoutout to Braille and Nutella, both born during the world wars). But the Krummlauf rifle isn't one of those success stories. On paper, a gun with a curved barrel that lets you shoot around corners or from inside a tank without exposing yourself sounds like a brilliant idea. What could possibly go wrong? As it turns out - quite a bit. The tighter the bend, the quicker the barrel wore out: some versions failed after just 160-300 shots. In the end, this invention proved to be as short-lived as its barrel.	181

While humans haven't changed much biologically for thousands of years, we can't truly grasp how ancient people (or even our grandparents) actually thought. 20	+1 In the early 20th century, tanks were still a new idea, and inventors were free to dream big. Sometimes, they dreamed a little too big. The Wallace Leaping Tank may be the weirdest and most useless tank ever imagined. In reality, it was less of a tank and more of a jumping bunker. The idea was to create a fully symmetrical vehicle with equal armor on all sides and six guns arranged in a circle. Instead of tracks or wheels, it was supposed to move by "jumping" using a giant central leg. Yes, seriously. A jumping tank. A prototype was built, but it turned out slow, unstable, and completely impractical. It was soon abandoned, and rightfully forgotten... until we dug it up for a chapter in The Black Book!	122
