The increased use of mobile phones and computers makes people lose the ability to communicate face to face. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

In an era characterized by digital communication, many individuals find it difficult to interact with others in face-to-face social settings, particularly in bustling urban areas. While there are clear benefits to using cellphones and computers for communication purposes, I agree that essential social skills are declining as a result of their interference. Undoubtedly, technological devices have revolutionised the way we communicate with one another. With easy access to mobile phones and personal computers, many people now find it easier to keep in touch with their loved ones and make new friends, irrespective of geographical boundaries. Gone are the days when individuals had to physically travel to remote destinations to check in with their extended relatives or talk to strangers, as today's social networking sites and instant messaging apps have fostered a culture of togetherness where we can not only maintain close bonds with family and friends but also connect with people from diverse backgrounds. This feature is particularly appealing to international students and employees, who rely on digital devices to alleviate feelings of loneliness and isolation through text messages and video calls. However, I accept that the rise of online communication has led to the erosion of vital interpersonal skills. With the widespread availability of electronic gadgets and technological tools, along with the rise of distance learning and remote employment, especially since the Covid-19 pandemic, many people have adopted a more sedentary lifestyle. Given the excessive amounts of time spent indoors, it comes as no surprise that individuals of all ages are missing out on valuable opportunities to practise their social abilities, from body language and active listening to conflict resolution and negotiation, leading to the rise of mutual misunderstandings and conflicts in both personal and professional relationships. Take my home country of Uzbekistan, where many people, especially those residing in large cities, lack the ability to navigate the complexities of small talk and deep conversations due to their lack of experience in social events and one-on-one dialogues. In conclusion, although the virtual means of communication have broken down geographical barriers and brought people from different places together, their detrimental effects on our social abilities cannot be overstated. Only by striking a harmonious balance between online and real-life interactions can we cultivate and maintain important interpersonal skills.

In an era characterized by escalating crime rates, opinions differ as to whether the most effective solution to crime lies in imposing longer prison terms or if there are better alternatives. While extending incarceration offers certain benefits, I believe that governments have more effective measures at their disposal to address the root causes of crime. Proponents of prolonged imprisonment cite various reasons to support their stance. When convicted offenders receive lengthy custodial sentences, they suffer substantial physical and psychological abuse, along with demoralizing feelings of isolation and disenfranchisement, instilling a profound sense of responsibility and fear of reoffending. Such a stringent approach can serve as a powerful deterrent for both current and prospective lawbreakers, potentially reducing recidivism rates and enhancing public safety. In a world where the justice system is often disregarded due to its lenient laws and regulations, the enforcement of harsh penalties like extended prison terms could make a big difference in discouraging criminal behavior. However, in my view, it is important for countries to prioritize crime prevention strategies over punitive measures. This can be accomplished by offering rehabilitation programs for inmates, such as vocational training and mental health counseling, which would make it easier to reintegrate back into society. In addition, enhancing job opportunities and increasing average wages in both the private and public sectors to foster financial stability is crucial, as is cutting taxes for low-income families to alleviate economic pressures that often drive individuals toward criminality. Of particular significance is the implementation of public awareness campaigns like school-based programs and community outreach projects, which can inform the public about the repercussions of criminal conduct. Without these proactive measures, many individuals may resort to criminal activity not out of malice but due to ignorance or desperation. In conclusion, although longer prison sentences may deter some existing and potential offenders, I argue that such punitive measures pale in comparison to preventative strategies. Only by focusing on rehabilitation, promoting financial stability, and raising public awareness can we make strides in terms of reducing crime rates and cultivating a safer society.
