There’s a river where the water boils like in a kettle, reaching 93°C.
Scientists can’t figure out what heats it since there are no volcanoes or hot springs nearby.

Venetian blinds as a tool of invisible control
Venetian blinds were not invented to protect against the sun, but so that the homeowner could see the street while remaining completely invisible to passersby. It was an architectural method of controlling privacy in conditions of strict class hierarchy.
Allowing one to see, they hid the one looking. The modern office uses them to block out the outside world, forgetting that the original purpose was total surveillance of the space. #architecture #control #history

On Mars, there’s a mountain three times taller than Everest.
It’s 22 km high, but scientists don’t understand how it grew so massive since Mars has no moving plates like Earth.

Corn flakes against passions
Corn flakes were invented by John Harvey Kellogg in the late 19th century as a means to suppress sexual desire. The doctor believed that simple, bland food helped reduce the 'unhealthy' urges of youth.
It was believed that sweets and spices stimulated the nervous system, but corn did not. The irony is that later, tons of sugar were added to the product, turning the 'medicine' into a dessert.

Chess as a cabinet trainer
Chess was originally designed as a military simulation for courtiers, allowing them to hone tactical skills without risking real lives. It was an expensive game, accessible only to the upper strata of society for entertainment during breaks from hunting.
Today, a chessboard is a typical office souvenir that is supposed to "broadcast" a manager's strategic mindset. Previously, the game was used to simulate war; now, it is used to simulate intelligence in the business environment.

The Second Brain in Your Gut
Your gut is controlled by an autonomous network of 500 million neurons that works independently of the brain. This "enteric nervous system" is so complex that it continues to regulate digestion even if the connection to the central nervous system is completely severed.
The gut is the only organ that can "think" for itself. We are used to thinking that intelligence lives in the skull, but the GI tract possesses its own sovereign "processor" for handling food-related data. #neurobiology #health #gut

QWERTY — The Result of Fighting Jams
The QWERTY keyboard layout seems logical to us only out of habit, but it was actually created to slow down typing. Early typewriters often jammed if the letter levers were pressed too quickly in succession.
Engineer Christopher Sholes deliberately placed frequently occurring letter pairs far apart so that the levers had time to return. A mechanical flaw became a standard that we have been unable to change for a century and a half.

The price of the vertical triumph
Our skeleton is not an ideal blueprint, but a "patch" applied to the body of a quadrupedal ancestor. Changing the pelvic angle for bipedalism redistributed the load on the spine but simultaneously created a critical narrowing of the birth canal.
This is a classic example of an evolutionary "bug," where an adaptation for one advantage (energy-efficient running) automatically creates a fundamental vulnerability in another (reproduction). We pay for the ability to see the horizon with a constant threat during reproduction.

Napkins as a charm against curses
The first cloth napkins served not only for hygiene, but also for the ritual cleansing of the mouth from an 'evil word' accidentally spoken during a meal. In ancient cultures, it was believed that through food one could cast a curse, so the mouth required special sacred cleansing.
Over time, the functionality narrowed down to wiping off sauce, but the act itself remained part of the hospitality ritual. Even now, we unconsciously 'ground' ourselves by placing a napkin on our laps.
