All that being said, I do believe that those of us who hail from the north should live in cold climates. Winter is a part of the struggle that made us what we are.

I love the memes as much as the next person but I have spent months living outside, close to nature in a cold climate. You pray for the sun, you long for its warmth (warmth = anything at all over 30 F). When you have no artificial lights, you truly comprehend why the solstice matters. We love winter in large part because of the things our ancestors created to make it pleasant. Cosy sweaters and wool clothing, fireplaces, candles and lamps, celebrations and food, cheerful decor, and houses to escape the worst of the cold. There's nothing wrong with that, but winter itself, while indeed beautiful, is unmerciful. Our ancestors understood it for what it was.
