Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome (ZES)🧚‍♀:

​Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome (ZES) is a rare but serious digestive disorder. It occurs when one or more tumors—called gastrinomas—form in your pancreas or the upper part of your small intestine (duodenum).

The Mechanism:

​These gastrinomas secrete large amounts of the hormone gastrin, which causes your stomach to produce too much acid. This excessive acid leads to: ​Severe peptic ulcers. ​Inflammation of the digestive lining. ​Chronic diarrhea.

Common Symptoms:

​Abdominal Pain: Often burning or aching in the upper abdomen. ​Diarrhea: Chronic and sometimes fatty stools (steatorrhea). ​Heartburn: Persistent acid reflux (GERD). ​Nausea & Vomiting: Sometimes containing blood if ulcers are severe. ​Unintended Weight Loss.

How is it Diagnosed?

​Diagnosis usually involves a combination of: ​Blood Tests: To check for elevated levels of gastrin. ​Secretin Stimulation Test: A specific test to confirm ZES. ​Imaging (CT, MRI, or Octreotide scan): To locate the gastrinoma tumors. ​Endoscopy: To visualize ulcers in the stomach or duodenum.

Treatment Options:

​The goal of treatment is to manage the acid and remove the tumors if possible: ​Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs): High doses of medications like Omeprazole or Pantoprazole to suppress acid production. ​Surgery: To remove the gastrinomas (if they haven't spread). ​Chemotherapy: Used if the tumors are cancerous and have metastasized to the liver or other areas.
