🧠 SQL Interview Question (Top-N per Group + Tie Handling - Tricky) 📌 scores(student_id, subject, marks) ❓ Ques : 👉 Find students who scored the highest marks in each subject. 👉 If multiple students have the same top score, include all of them (handle ties). 🧩 How Interviewers Expect You to Think • Group data by subject 📚 • Identify highest marks within each group • Handle ties correctly (don’t lose rows) • Use window functions (RANK vs ROW_NUMBER) 💡 SQL Solution SELECT student_id, subject, marks FROM ( SELECT scores.student_id, scores.subject, scores.marks, RANK() OVER ( PARTITION BY scores.subject ORDER BY scores.marks DESC ) AS rnk FROM scores ) ranked_scores WHERE ranked_scores.rnk = 1; 🔥 Why This Question Is Powerful • Tests Top-N per group (very common pattern) 🧠 • Checks understanding of RANK vs ROW_NUMBER ❤️ React if you want more real interview-level SQL questions 🚀

𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝗲𝗿: You have 2 minutes to solve this SQL query. List employees who earn more than their department manager's salary from the employees table (manager_id references employee id). 𝗠𝗲: Challenge accepted!
SELECT e1.name, e1.department, e1.salary
FROM employees e1
JOIN employees e2 ON e1.department = e2.department AND e1.manager_id = e2.id
WHERE e1.salary > e2.salary;
I self-joined the employees table on department and manager_id to compare each employee's salary against their manager's in the same department. The WHERE clause filters for employees earning more. This tests join mastery for hierarchical data, common in org charts. 𝗧𝗶𝗽 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗤𝗟 𝗝𝗼𝗯 𝗦𝗲𝗲𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀: Self-joins shine for intra-table relationships like managers/employees or siblings—practice with employee hierarchies to impress in data engineering interviews! SQL Interview Questions for 0-1 year of Experience (Asked in Top Product-Based Companies). Sharpen your SQL skills with these real interview questions! Q1. Customer Purchase Patterns - You have two tables, Customers and Purchases: CREATE TABLE Customers ( customer_id INT PRIMARY KEY, customer_name VARCHAR(255) ); CREATE TABLE Purchases ( purchase_id INT PRIMARY KEY, customer_id INT, product_id INT, purchase_date DATE ); Assume necessary INSERT statements are already executed. Write an SQL query to find the names of customers who have purchased more than 5 different products within the last month. Order the result by customer_name. Q2. Call Log Analysis - Suppose you have a CallLogs table: CREATE TABLE CallLogs ( log_id INT PRIMARY KEY, caller_id INT, receiver_id INT, call_start_time TIMESTAMP, call_end_time TIMESTAMP ); Assume necessary INSERT statements are already executed. Write a query to find the average call duration per user. Include only users who have made more than 10 calls in total. Order the result by average duration descending. Q3. Employee Project Allocation - Consider two tables, Employees and Projects: CREATE TABLE Employees ( employee_id INT PRIMARY KEY, employee_name VARCHAR(255), department VARCHAR(255) ); CREATE TABLE Projects ( project_id INT PRIMARY KEY, lead_employee_id INT, project_name VARCHAR(255), start_date DATE, end_date DATE ); Assume necessary INSERT statements are already executed. The goal is to write an SQL query to find the names of employees who have led more than 3 projects in the last year. The result should be ordered by the number of projects led.

If you want to be a data analyst, you should work to become as good at SQL as possible. 📱 1. SELECT What a surprise! I need to choose what data I want to return. 2. FROM Again, no shock here. I gotta choose what table I am pulling my data from. 3. WHERE This is also pretty basic, but I almost always filter the data to whatever range I need and filter the data to whatever condition I’m looking for. 4. JOIN This may surprise you that the next one isn’t one of the other core SQL clauses, but at least for my work, I utilize some kind of join in almost every query I write. 5. Calculations This isn’t necessarily a function of SQL, but I write a lot of calculations in my queries. Common examples include finding the time between two dates and multiplying and dividing values to get what I need. Add operators and a couple data cleaning functions and that’s 80%+ of the SQL I write on the job. React ♥️ for more
