Indra sees how powerful Garuda is and wants to be his friend instead of being his enemy. Garuda accepts and they are now friends. 8	Bṛhaspati tells Indra that a giant bird (Garuda) is planning on stealing the Soma (The Vedic offering to the Gods) , which is also called Amrta (The Elixir of Immortality) . This conflict is a result of Indra’s past actions. Long ago, Indra offered to help Rishi Kashyapa perform a sacrifice to gain a son. Indra saw that the Vālakhilya Brahmins were extremely physically weak, and mocked them for their weakness. In retaliation they performed a sacrifice to create a new superior Indra. Kashyapa told them to make this incarnation a Bird, and that Bird will be his Son. Therefore, Garuda is actually an incarnation of Indra, and that’s why he is so powerful. He comes across Vālakhilya ascetics (type of Brahmin), who are hanging upside down on tree branches as penance, and wild Niṣada people (One of the Brahmins was married to a Niṣada woman), and two ascetic brothers who had cursed each other to live as animals.
