When you take your money out of the bank and put it in a money market fund and they buy commercial paper or a treasury it doesn’t affect money supply. If that money market fund parks the money at the Fed in a reverse repo it is most definitely contractionary. 40% of money markets funds are in reverse repos with the Fed which is about $2 trillion of the 5 trillion in money market complex. Powell said at last meeting the reverse repos have no effect. He is wrong. It’s definitely a contributor to the M2 negative y/y growth rate. Contraction in bank credit and shadow banking credit is most of it but Fed reverse repos available to money market funds plays a part. @DowdEdward
